OK I still need some help

Hey everyone. I've only got to work 8 hours today, so I had some time this morning to spend with the tractor. I posted a few days ago that I have some sort of rattling knocking noise going on. So I got on a hill and let it coast down. when I killed the engine the noise went away completely. So after I got to the bottom I cranked her up and got my long screwdriver out again and started listening. It seems like the noise is coming from the back end of the engine. And I think it is coming more from the right hand side of the engine towards the back. That's right hand side if you were sitting on the tractor. Side opposite of the starter. So, should I pull the pan off and look up inside, or would I be able to see anything? Any ideas? Thanks.

Ah . . .
If it was an NAA like mine I was going to say the hydraulic pump
cause mine is a little noisy and in that right rear location.

So I'll leave you to the 8N experts.

Internals like rods or mains will make a knocking not
rattling. Are we talking like a radius rod rattling on
the housing? I'm wondering if there isn't part of an
old starter drive in the bell housing and things are
hitting it.

you might want to pull plug wires off one at a time and see if it goes away or changes, use gloves and well insulated pliers!! they do make insulated pliers for this.

Just for giggles, you might check the exhaust manifold on the #4 cylinder for a gasket leak. Sometimes that can make strange noises if leaking.

Could be a number of things. Loose flywheel or pressure plate. Broken stater drive parts that are still in the bell housing. Or maybe something internal of the engine. I would try draining the oil and look for a silver sheen to the oil. If you see what looks like silver in the oil you may have a bad engine problem

Well the engine was rebuilt a few years ago so I wouldn't think that any old starter pieces would be left in there. I hope you are right about the exhaust gasket, I will check that. Do you think it would be a waste of time to pull the pan off and see if there's anything obvious like a connecting rod? If it was hitting something there ought to be a shiny spot or ding?

" Do you think it would be a waste of time to pull the pan off and see if there's anything obvious like a connecting rod? "

Yes.

Well, actually worse than a waste of time because the chances of breaking something else on that fruitless search is very likely.

What could I break by dropping the oil pan off and looking up at the crank? Just looking for anything obvious?

I have no qualms about dropping a pan, pulling the rod and main caps one at a time and inspecting them.
Ns are kind of a pia to do because you have to loosen the front of the pan from the bolster but it's still not that hard.
Even plastigauge them.
A guy can whizz around and guess or he can VERIFY.
I verify.
Especially since you say it was rebuilt not that long ago.
Based on the questions I see asked here almost every day on "rebuilds" I wouldn't trust most of them much farther than I could throw one.
I don't know what a new pan gasket costs now days but a gasket and some time is a lot cheaper than a crank grind or a window in your block.

Wasn't there something a month or so ago about the oil pick
up on a N getting hit by a crank journal.

Yes that was me, had the pan off for oil pump rebuild, putting pan back on nuged the pick up tube and it was hitting a journal, sounded like a rod but most noise was at drain plug

Well that's funny. I was looking at some exploded view diagrams earlier today and was wondering if it was possible for the oil pick up to get hit by the crank. As soon as I have time to I think I will pull the pan and check that. I haven't listened at the drain plug but will do that as well. maybe the sound is being carried to the back of the engine. Thanks man. If anyone else has anything to add I would appreciate all the help I can get.

Wouldn't that noise speed up with engine RPM?
If I remember right, Phillip said his didn't change speed?
