Everything I know about my '51 8n I have learned on htis forum and from Yesterdaystractors. Before I ask a new question I owe Dell (WA) an apoligy. sorry I did not listen to you in the first place. After wasting time trying to fix the starter rI took you advice and bought a new starter. Solved that problem. thanks

James.......what part of "disconnected from brushes" don't you understand??? And NO that is NOT JB Weld repairable. Byte the bullett and trade yer BAD starter motor fer NEW rebuilt on with modern "clutch" style Bendix. As a general comment on starter Bendix's, they must be SQUEAKY CLEAN. Spray with evaporative BRAKE cleaner and letter drip dry. ........the amazed Dell"

Now I need rear tire info / advice. My '51 8n blew out a rear tire. One it came with It was cracked and looked dry but has lasted 3 years. The rear tires are 14 4 28 s. both tires match and look about tobe in the same condition.
My question: what size can I replace the blown one with and still use the remaining one. The reason for doing so is obviously my budget. I am searching for a used one in that size but so far no luck. so can I mix sizes for the time being?
thank you James

If it has 14.4X28 it is best to go with another one the same size. Tread wear will not matter much if any. I may have pair but if your not close would not be worth it to you

boy i messed that up they are 13.6 - 28. They are not the original 8n tires. just some replacement the prior owner put on it before i bought it 3
years ago. I do not know what those first 2 sets of numbers mean; 13. 6 28. I guess the 28 is the wheel diameter?
thanks James

I i had the numbers wrong the current tires are 13.6 28. one cracked open and flat the other lots of cracks but still holds air. I will travel to get them for a good price (unless you are in South America). I'm in North West Arkansas.
thanks James

13.6 is Two sizes too large for an N.
Ground speeds are fast enough on those - especially reverse, to go worsening the problem with over size tires.
I suggest you get the right size for it - 11.2X28.

Jim........check "Tucker Tire" fer good prices on NEW ag-bar tires. Its HARD to find good used tractor tires 'cuz they all gitt dry-rot. It isn't as iff'n yer gonna be doin' 60-mph. BTW, rear tire pressure is 12-psi. While the original 9N's were 10-28, the DOT made mfgrs re-label them 11.2-28. I'm from the Gov't, I'm here to help you, eh? .......the tired Dell

13.6X28 are hard to come by in this area. I have probably 4 or 5 tractor that use that size so those I would never let go of but I am probably around 150-200 miles from you here at the Lake of the Ozarks Missouri

Last year I bought what looked to be a good set of used tires, Now one of them has the side wall ripping out. I bit the bullet and got two from tucker tire, Ordered on monday and got them on Friday, not bad since I live in Oregon. Had to pay an extra 50 but it was worth it. Got new rims in the deal. Now I get to put some weight in them and get them on the tractor.

I paid $210 each for new 11.2 x 28's here in MI this year.
Not terrible I guess, considering the price of truck tires. :?
I have to agree with UltraDog and Hobo, too big is not good
on an N. I have one excellent 12.4 and can't find a match for it.

add my voice
13.6 is much too big for an N
find some 11.2's and you'll think you hot-rodded your tractor.
tractors pull...gear ratio is important
big diameter tires are changing that ratio in the wrong direction...

thanks to all for the help. I'll use 11.2 28 s
Now I need to know what are the correct original size rims for my '51 8n? I see 9, 10 and 12 inch on ebay?
and what size socket is the lug nut, and what size for wheel nuts?
Can I mount the tires on a a wheel myself or am I gonna need special tools or machines?
thanks, James
