Need help with serial numbers

I inherited what I believe to be a 9N with a new piece of land. It's been sitting in a field for 20 years but it's really not in bad condition. I'd like to figure out what it really is (model, year) but the serial numbers don't conform to anything I can find online. near the top left side of the engine block behind the oil filter the number reads <>123456, those are diamonds by the way. Hard to believe its 123456 I know but that's whats stamped. Any help would be appreciated. I'll try to attach a pic.

Wilton........is California TAXING old farm tractors now??? Yeah, I agree *123456* is probably a made-up number. Coulda been a replacement engine which came from the factory with NO number and the installing mechanic was to re-stamp the original number, or a number of his choice. Look at it as "braggin' rights" to NEW 9N. BTW, 9N's have 3-speed trannys and 4-nipple front mount dizzys. Me? All I care about is whether the engine is a 4-nipple front mount or 5-nipple side mount. You can count nipples, can't you? 20-yrs in a field, check fer "dry-rot" of tires. Rear tires, 12psi, ($150-200 ea) front tires 26psi. (used are fine) Engine compression should be 90psi min dry; new engine is about 125psi. Many times yer rings gitt "stuck" and will have low compression on one or all cylinders. 1-oz ATF down each sparkie hole will usually un-stick'um inna'bout 1-week. 20-yrs and you'll need a NEW 6-volt battery. While the 9N/2N came from the factory 6-volt positive (+) ground, no tellin' what the previous owner has done. BTW, 9N/2N's don't have a voltage regulator 'cuz YOU are the voltage regulator. Ya haffta gitt off'n yer butt-buckett and adjust the 3rd brush on the back of the genny. Generally want 3-5 +amps showing on the amp-meter at 1/3-1/2 throttle. BTW, unlike 12-volt alternators in yer deLuxMobile, gennys don't charge at idle. ......HTH, electrical Dell

They haven't gone as far taxing old field finds yet but it probably won't be long. With he lack of rain here there will probably a fine for urinating soon. Thanks for the info. Hopefully I'll have her up and running fairly soon. It's a 3 speed with the front mount distributor. I'll have to get some pictures posted it could possibly be a little of all the N series tractors, who knows.

Great info on the link, thanks. So next question, whered the starter button go???

It doesn't seem to upload my photos?

Early 9Ns had the starter button on the left side of the dash.
