my 8n keeps cutting out

Is it Ok to run my 8n with the fuel valve open all the way.?..my 8n will start & run .. But occasionally cut out.. Never shuting off completely. However, it ran fine with fuel valve all the way open... Any suggestions.. Thanx

o you have more than a gallon of gas in it?

Yes it does

Remember there is a screen in the tank on the sediment bowl assembly. With it open 2 or so turns (normal running) the screen may be mostly plugged and with the valve wide open (reserve position ) it is flowing gas thru a different port or opening thus more flow. When tank is almost empty remove assembly and clean screen.

2 turns open for normal running. All the way open to get you back home for more gas. Pull the carb drain plug and make sure you have a good steady flow of gas out of the carb. Let it flow for a few minutes. Catch the gas to check for dirt/rust/water. If flow is poor work you way back till you find where it slows down at

Almost correct. I was having the same problem today, plus the gas was leaking around my sediment bowel. So I drained remaining gas then removed the sediment components from the tank. In the process, I learned exactly how it works, and I had been misunderstanding it myself!

In the picture, you see a tube. This tube sticks up into the gas tank. Gas can flow into the casing from 2 holes, one at the top end of the tube (when there is more than 1 gallon in the tank), and also where the tube enters the casing (around the tubing). Both holes exit inside the casing, where the shut-off valve rides.

With 2 turns on the shut-off valve, gas flows through the tube only and into the glass bulb. Full open, gas flows through the tubing (if there is more than 1 gallon in the tank), and also around the tube, and then into the gas bulb.

Once gas is in the bulb, it freely flows through a screen that is between the casing and glass bulb, and into the gas line to the carb. Sediment stays in the bulb, trapped by the screen.

As you can see in the picture, the hole around the tubing is totally plugged. I am replacing the shut-off valve because the wheel is broken off.

Hope this helps clear up how this piece of a 8N work.

Murrey, working off Gunny's picture, there should be a fine mesh screen that keeps small particles of 'gunk' out of the port that works when nob is opened fully. Unfortunately that screen is open at the top and does not stop floating gunk from getting in the tall center tube which is the primary pick-up when nob is opened 2 turns. My guess is your center tube is plugged up. You could take the fuel line off sediment bowl assembly and attempt to blow air back into tank by opening nob up only 2 turns or drain tank and remove assembly for inspection. If tube is gunked up check tank for unwanted 'stuff' in it. I got so tired of back blowing assembly I replaced the tank.
