How do you tell if the oil pump is bad?? I changed the oil in my 8n and now I have no oil psi. I took it all apart and found nothing wrong. You told me about the primer but I still get nothing. I used 10/40 syndic blend. is that my problem? I have never had to prim this tractor before and it ran great last year before I parked it. I really don't have time for this tractor to be down.

Your oil has nothing to do with it. Loosen
the oil line going into the filter canister
and turn the engine over with the key off.
If that doesn't work drain the oil and
check the pick up tube to see if it's
loose.

ell, what about the other part of Bruce's rec? Did you disconnect oil line into filter & see if anything comes out when cranked?

yes I tried with and with out priming it
f you were nice & tidy & didn't dump oil all over the engine, then you probably didn't really prime it. How much volume did you actually get into the engine? Hose & bottle or squirt can? Look how far you have to go to reach the pump:

how much do I have to get into that front hole?

Just enough to fill the oil pump. It doesn't need to be any heavier than your regular oil. If it won't prime on regular engine oil it is flat worn out or you have a vacuum leak in the pickup.

Im working on the same problem,,I tore the tractor pan back off and took the pump and
pickup tube off...the problem I found was the new pickup tube, the plate that mounts to the
oil pump is not machined flat and is pulling air instead of oil..

I had this question and JMOR suggested:
"A "squirt" isn't enough. Look at the path from the relief past the valve seat, down & through the oil gallery, on down through the block, through oil pump passages to the pump gears. You may make a mess, but use a squeeze bottle & hose & try for 5 ounces.
A squirt probably never made it out of the spring/plunger cavity."

I didn't get mine pri,ed the first time with an oilcan and used this (outboard motor lower unit) hand pump with 90w to prime the second time. Plastic nipple fits orifice perfect and no mess.

ust be far off of flat, as the gasket ought to take up a bit of un-flat.
