Nasty Dogleg

Hi All,
I'm trying to decide if the side panels that came with my '52 8N can be salvaged. How is the dogleg attached to the radiator grill? Is what I'm seeing a stud or a bolt? the parts catalog doesn't really show what it is. Is that (whatever) hole in the bracket threaded ? Any help would be greatly appreciated ! !

I'm not sure about the 8N, but my 2N has those studs there, and they fit into holes on the bottom inside of each dog leg....then the dog-leg gets tightened up to hold the grill tight at the bottom. The grill then swivels up to the hood and is attached by spring pins at the top, underside of the hood!

That sound right to you!!?????? That's the way mine is!!!!

Hi HCooke.
I don't know, I've never been around that area of the sheet metal, the side panels and grill were not attached when I got the machine. Looks like PO had done some spot welding where the grill and dogleg meet.

I can tell you the after market side panels have a hole in that position. The thread is 5/16 X 18. A one inch bolt goes through the grill into the side panel for the grill to pivot out & in. The original side panels had a pin sticking out.

Hi GB in MT,
Let's see if I can get my brain around this,
The stud is attached to the dogleg permanently
and goes into a hole in the bottom outside of the grill? Then the dogleg is snugged up with the axle bolt. How am I doin' so far? Do you have any idea how far that stud sticks out? It looks like these have been cut off with bolt cutters.

About 3/8" to 1/2" per side.

The pins pictured do not look to be serviceable as is.

Hi Ronnie G,
That answers a lot of questions.
Guess I might try to tap that monster out to accept a bolt. I have no doubt that what I have is the (almost 60 year old) original.

My studs are....approx. 1/2 ", in diam., and about 1 1/4" long.!!
If the ones you show there have been cut off with bolt cutters, then mine are not like yours.
I could never be able to use bolt cutters on mine. (Solid metal dowel, welded to the inside of the dog leg on the bracket I see in yer pic.

Do you have the hood and dog legs avail so you can look to see if there are holes under the lip of the hood, where sping loaded pins could go???,(should be three small holes, one on each side and one in the middle).....and on the grill sides where there may be a hole of size that the dog leg pin would go????

This scan may help ya understand the areas to look for the holes I mentioned. This came out of my 46 parts book (for the 2N)
BUT....this shows a bolt like Ronnie G. said, instead of a stud like I have.

I also have the parts listed by # if ya need them. I don't really think those will help.....you prob. have to get lucky to find the right parts.!!
And I also think the 8N doglegs, mount dif. than my 2N.
But they will be close!!!!

Gary That's a drawing that I haven't seen before.Thank you.
I'm thinking about drilling and tapping to accept
a 5/16 bolt if there's enough "meat" to tap into,
I can stick my pinky finger under there and it feels like there may be some backing that might possibly hold a bolt. I really am not looking forward to going the after-market route!!Hate to scrape the little one off the ceiling again ,if you know what I mean.

Both of my tractors have 1/4" bolts holding the grill on..

(quoted from post at 10:29:22 07/12/10) Thanks Sean,
Are the 1/4 " bolts tapped into the dogleg?

My 52 8N is original as far as I can tell and its a pin sticking out, about 1/4" diameter and maybe 3/8" long. I just repainted the hood and doglegs and didnt try to see the backside of them as they were in pretty good shape.

Two bolts would be nice but one bolt and one pin would still let you remove the grill without loosening a dog leg . Of course two pins would be less likely to vibrate loose and let the grill fall out .

On my not so pretty work tractors I have used a 2" bolt with a nut tacked about 3/4" up the threads to hold the dog legs on . The bolt head sticks out far enough I can start it with my fingers when replacing the hood / doglegs . It takes me less than 5 minutes to remove the hood and gas tank when I bring one in the shop to do a full service / tune up .
