Stripped brass bolt on starter

I've been living with a stripped brass bolt for the battery cable on the starter forever. I put a nut, two washer, and another nut on it to hold it but can't do more than hand tight and it loosens up again. Any suggestions?

Got a shop nearby that rebuilds starters or alternators? Stop by with the starter in hand and ask about replacement. You can do it yourself but the shop will know what to look out for and how to reassemble it easily and correctly. They can also let you know about upcoming problems with the starter and may be able to do some proactive repairs that will save you more money down the road.

My 9n has that that problem since I bought it in 99. I have been using three washers under the battery cable so the nut is clear up at the top of the stud.

I figured someday I would have to replace the brushes and would either get the rebuild kit or buy a starter. I have rebuilt starters before. Soldering the brushes or studs is not an easy task. The stud must make a really good connection for it to work.To solder I use the torch and this tool (which I can't remember the correct name) has a handle and a large piece of copper on the end.( the old timmers know what I'm talking about?) You heat the copper and then place it on the joint to be soldered.

I have never seen those screw on replacement studs before. Has anyone tried them? How well do they work?

Redogge,

Add this improv to the mix . . .

Find a suitable clamp (like a batt post clamp but small) and solder or bolt the clamp to the end of your cable.

You could even drill out an old battery post so that it would screw tightly onto your worn studd, and then just go with a marine style batt clamp that you can bolt your cable to.

The possibilities are endless.

Before I went through the effort of pulling the starter and then disassembling it I would try my hand at soldering the battery cable DIRECTLY to the bolt on the side.
Then if you ever have to remove the starter for a split or some such you can bring it in then and have the new bolt installed.
