Mechanical steering box...ball nut

This is a follow-on question to my previous question regarding a Ford 640 mechanical steering box that I have apart.

Can the ball nut be threaded off of the end of the steering column?

Follow on to that:

If the ball nut is threaded off of the steering column, should I expect ball bearings to go all over the place? Or, will they stay put? Because; if they won't stay put, it seems that I would be better off removing them in a controlled fashion before threading the nut off of the end.

Note: I watched a very good youtube video about reassembling one that has been all taken apart and ball bearings removed, but it didn't say if he was able to thread it off of the end with the bearings staying in place.

Yes, the ball nut can be threaded off the ball screw.

And yes, if you just unscrew it the balls will go everywhere.

Should you choose the remove it get a cardboard, pvc, whatever tube that is the same size as the ball screw. As you threaded the ball nut off let it slip over the tube. The balls should stay inside.

While it can be challenging, if you do loose all the balls they can be placed back in while adding them and threaded the nut and screw together.

I don't think that the ball nut can be taken off the end of the shaft unless you take one or both of the ball tubes off first.

There is no good reason to remove that ball nut anyway that I know about.????

The gear oil dried out, and the shaft/ball nut are a little cruddy, but yes; if I can clean it all up with the ball nut in place and it all can be re-lubricated and moves freely; then I would rather not open the can of worms.

The ball nut can NOT be threaded off the end of the shaft. The grooves stop before reaching each end. You have to remove the ball return tubes and work the balls out to get it apart. Wash it, clean it, spin it, lube it, do whatever you want with it. It won't unscrew and you won't lose the balls.
