I need help dating it

Picked up this 9n tonight and I cant seem to date it. Its obviously had the block replaced-which is cracked-No double ribbed fenders, no adjustable left side link, has the early governor w/o oil line, grease zerks front of spindle, correct chrome pieces though most has worn off, aluminum dash which I don't understand as it looks like the hole for the starter button upper left side but the button is by the shifter, no hydraulic dip stick on the shifter or on the right side, Theres no cutout. has a later 8n generator, smooth dog legs, Only # I could get on it was on the left trumpet theres no date like there is on some on the right side. non press radiator. Serial # on the engine is 32000 range. no red light on the dash. No key on the dash though it looks like it may have gone where the bolt is on the lower left side. Don't ask me what the deal is with the button next to the bolt.

Might I suggest a coy smile and some small talk to start? LOL

I think it's like many others, mixed parts over the years.
Does the right dogleg have the hole for the hand crank choke?
Looks like it might, that might help place that part.
Any date on the hydraulic pump? Also easily changed, but a
place to look maybe.
 
I think you have parts from a 39 and a 40. I don't think the shifter top and dash are off the same tractor. That's why there is no transmission dipstick.

The rear axles I think have been replaced.

Is the shifter top aluminum? The cutout has been replaced with a voltage regulator.

You are missing the starter switch that goes in a hole below the voltage regulator. So the push button in the shifter top won't start the engine. The button by the bolt I think is now the starter button.

I think the key should be on the lower left side near that button.

I have a 9n with number 27922.It has the non pressure radiator. Early governor,cast iron dash and shifter top.
 
The dash and shifter base are aluminum. There is a hole on the right dog leg..I'll have to compare it to the other dog leg I have that was off the wartime tractor. But that wasn't a smooth dog leg. There's several small holes all over the hood what they did that for I don't know because it was a nice hood. The hydraulic pump just says 9n on it. I don't see a date like on other pumps. And its aluminum base. There's quite a bit of thick red paint on everything but the block and sheet metal. I "think" theres some sort of lightly stamped # on the right axel but I cant read it through the paint. Definatly not a cast date. The guy I bought it from was the 2nd owner and he I don't think ever used it. The original owner is close to 80 now. All he said was he used it to mow ditches. The crack on the block doesn't appear horrible. I would have to take it somewhere to be welded. Its hard to say the internal condition the petcock is out so im sure no coolant in it. Though there is in the radiator. The pump must work the lift arms came up when we moved the tractor. I mainly wanted it for the lights, dash and rear tires and rims. Steering box is real tight on it.
 
My 9n also has little holes drilled in it. The holes are for little snaps to fasten a heat hourser around the engine.
I think I still have the snaps I removed. Ill try to get a picture of the snaps and holes.

point if I buy another tractor I'm gonna be

for. We need to get headed to the lake soon
and finish painting the boat so can get
some fishing done this summer.

LOL my boats ready, but I'm not sure I'm up to launching it by myself. My normal fishing buddies are all booked up, on call or some such thing right now. Looking like it's going to be June before I get out.

Remember, it's easier to ask forgiveness than it is to ask for permission! And you are not in trouble unless you care if you are in trouble.

I found some of the snaps I removed from my 9n hood.

I see it says in my Ford N series book. The early tractors did not have a transmission dipstick. They had a plug on the lower RH side.
I took a snap shot of the photo in the book. This is a good book on N's. Shows a lot of the part details on the early units.

Lisa........unless yer a sphincterly challenged originality authority, why are you chasing serial numbers fer a date? Me? All I care about is whether ittza 4-nipple front mount or 5-nipple side mount. I'm assuming you can count nipples, eh? In the early 1990's, knew a cupple of real tractor mech's and they rebuilt several 2N's and NEVER made a "profit". This was in the days before "Dennis Carpenter" and our hosts, Yesterdays-Tractors was jus' gittin' started. Chester & Beemers "Originality Guide" and Ford's "Master Parts Catalog" (MPC) should be yer go-to guides. .......HTH, Dell
 
Be aware that this book has a lot of inaccuracies as well. The authors did a great job with fantastic pictures and certainly meant well, but they failed to do their homework.

Early 9N's had a number stamped on the top of the transmission or differential flange where they meet on the right side (facing forward) if you find one it is usually within 200 units of the serial number. Can take some work with a wire brush to find it. Later tractors do not have that.
