lift arm stabilizer?

My lift arms are swaying left and right pretty bad, when I use my box blade sometimes it gets caught in my tires, are the after market sway bars worth buying? And are they easy to install. If anyone has any pics as well I would like to see them thanks.
 
Yes, there are stabilizer bars that help stop that.
YT sells them for about $10.50 each. See here.
TSC also sells them. I might even have a spare set, not sure.

Your lower arms shouldn't reach your tires if you have the check
chains adjusted right, but a good bump on a blade can break the
chains so the stabilizer bars are still a great investment.

Make sure you have the stabilizer bar pins on the underside of your axel trumpets under the fender brackets. You will need two stabilizer bars and two 7/16" lynch pins for those under fender brackets. I would not drive your tractor with the box blade until you get the bars. You'll be sorry if you rip a big chunk out of one of the bar treads on your tires.

Those stabilizer bars are meant to be used in pairs, one on each side and when done that way all the stress is in tension. Even the cheapest pair should outlast you as the only wear point is where they pivot.
 
my buddy was bush hogging with his little tractor,
it was a small Ferguson, was not using stabilizer support bars.

the ball strap broke out on the end of one of his lift arms, this allow the bush hog to swing around and start crawling up the tire on the other side.

before he got this mess stopped, the blade has shredded the rear tire and bend the other lift arm. all this happened in just a few seconds.

all this would have been prevented if he has been using stabilizer supports.
I always use them when bush hogging, using the box blade, anything that can put side stress on my old lift arms.

my buddy got the mess stopped, it could have been much worse for him.

he also does not always check that the big nut that holds the bush hog blades onto the gearbox is tight and that the locking nut cotter pin is in place. another time he had the blades and stump jumper all come off the cutter while using it, he said it made a very loud noise, but fortunately for him, it fell straight down and hit the ground and did not hurt anything.

I highly recommend using stabilizer bars, or anti-sway bars, when mowing, back blading, discing, spring toothing, or box blading. Here is a photo from a few years ago with my 8N and a pair of aftermarket bars hooked up to my Dearborn Disc Harrow. The trick is to get the linch pins aligned on the fender brackets to directly face the pins on your tractor lift arm points. The aftermarket brackets have a series of holes to choose from. If ambitious, get a pair of original stabilizer bar brackets as I have and they will have only one pin hole and it will be in the correct position. Next is to get longer fender bolts. Assemble brackets and fenders but do not tighten down. Bars are 31-1/2" center to center. measure your pins and ball sockets to be sure. If not same you have pins misaligned. Connect a back blade or box blade to lift arms with stabilizer bars. You will need to test the lifting so nothing binds or bends before tightening down the bracket/fender bolts in place. Do not try to use any other holes than what I specified otherwise you will do damage to your lift system.

Good advice and picture from Tim. But, let me add one thing. Notice the Few links visible of the check chains going from the lower lift arms to the bracket around the PTO.

These chains when adjusted to the right length will keep your lift arms from swinging into your tires. I would still get the stabilizer bars though. They make your brush hog or back blade much more stable on the back of your tractor.

hanks guys, unfortunately I'll have to buy the kit I have no brackets under the trumpets.

Chris, I have a few sets of those brackets with pins.
I checked and I do have an extra set of stabilizer bars too.
If you want to drive out here I'd sell the whole setup for $20.
Two brackets, two pins, two stabilizer bars with lynch pins.
Or if you want to pay the shipping I'll send them to you.
They're used of course, took them off one of the tractors I bought.
They're painted blue to boot.

I got in the habit of using the sway bars on everything. Bought the kit for my 9N many years ago. Best investment for the N, next to the Zane Thing, another must have for a 9/2N.
