why do they leak, new fuel shutoff valve

My shutoff and sediment bowl are bad, the threads striped out of the aluminum. I have a new one that doesn't shut off
properly and unfortunately I found out the hard way. I checked it before I hooked the gas line up and it seemed to be
working properly. My float has a pinhole in it too so all the gas ended up on the floor of the equipment shed. are
there known problems with the replacements or a known fix?

The poor quality of aftermarket fuel shut-off valves is a long well-know problem.

Some leak or fail to shut off right out of the box. The expected life of those that do not and are used regularly is about two years.

If you have the screw type valve, you can modify it so that you can replace the O ring yourself every couple of years or so. Search the archives for instructions.

Dean,

I bought a new assembly because my OEM started dripping when open, but I haven't put it on yet. It turns out mine was only dripping because i had opened it up all the way. So I've continued using it but not opening it full anymore.

The new one does seem tacky "right out of the bag". There is free play in the knob to shaft connection [b:8ae127adc3]even though the set screw is tight[/b:8ae127adc3] and that bothers me as a pure indicator of poor quality.
Even the hokey new knob I made for mine (original was missing) has no free play at all!

So now I want to leave the old one on but I have a question.
when you said that the O ring could be replaced, were you speaking of the new junk or the original; i.e., can the original one be rebuilt?

Thanks
Terry

Does this look like the original assembly or a replacement?
Maybe it's the cheapie and that's why the knob was gone.
The shaft is brass.

Replaced my assembly as inlet screen was missing. Replacement worked good however screw feel off, thus knob fell off so used a wrench to turn on and off which messed up the stem. Got a replacement stem with knob (thread locked screw in place) now fuel leaks. A PO installed a rad drain cock in bottom of carb so just open it and put can under drain for now.

Howdy,

Incredible that even the new replacement stem leaked but I guess that's logical. Junk parts for junk shut off valves.

I was using a mini adjustable wrench on mine before I made the new wheel.

As I said, mine only drips when fully opened, so I think I'll leave this one on and before I ever put the new China one on if would have to be an emergency. So I'll scrounge up a couple of oldies and test them first. A friend here has a big tractor collection up on a mountain top and I'll have to ask him if he has any to spare.
