PTO Seal Thickness

I ordered a new PTO seal (part D9NN703BB) and it's quite a bit thinner than the old one I drove out, so much so that there is no way it will contact both snap rings when I drive it in.

I found a small handful of post referencing this, but not enough info. Do I drive the new thinner seal all the way to the front snap ring? Then install the rear snap ring even though it will be far from the end of the new seal?
 
Most seals nowadays are thinner than the old ones, so you are not the first to have this problem. Sometimes, two seals can be "stacked", if they are half-thickness, or a washer or custom spacer can be used.

It's definitely not half as thick so two stacked up wont work. And having to use a custom spacer seems like a PITA.

I notice there is another pto seal listed, part D8NN703AA. Is this the correct one?
 
I cant' answer that question, but as to spacers and such, modern parts sure have changed. I find that what used to be a simple repair now becomes a "restoration" or a "redesign".

I have a couple a lathes, and it seems nearly every day I am making up a custom part to keep the old stuff running.
 
put it in, let it ride.

unless there is a groove on the seal wear ring. it really don't matter. where can it go? ;)
 
Always a good idea when doubling up on seals to pack the space in between with grease, otherwise the outer one will perish from lack of lubrication quite quickly.

Ford NH 83944079 Is this the replacement seal you have?

Looks just like mine. Except I sure as heck didn't pay 35 dollars for it!
