8N oil leak into coolant

My BIL has a Ford 8N that is putting oil into the coolant. Apparently, there is no coolant getting into the oil. He has
not owned the tractor long and does not know its history. I have not seen the tractor and it has been a long time since
I have been around any 8N’s. He thinks it might be the head gasket. If I remember correctly, on a flat head engine,
there are no oil passages that get to the head gasket. It is my suspicion that the tractor may have frozen and there is
a small crack some where in an oil passage in the block that is allowing pressurized oil into the coolant. In any
event, to me the repair does not sound as cheap as a head gasket replacement. Do any of you have ideas? Thanks in
advance. Ken.....

" He thinks it might be the head gasket."

And he is probably correct.

And so are you about the oil passages.

Combustion gases leaking by the headgasket will produce "oil" in the coolant.

Regardless, I'd do a lot more checking before I'd yank the head off.

A leak down test will tell you if you have a head gasket problem. Occasionally, a compression check will too.

A steam cleaned spark plug is clear evidence of a head gasket problem.

But.....

I'd just re-torque the head bolts & let it go for a while.

99.99% chance it is the head gasket and that oil is blow by oil, not fresh crankcase oil. The compression is so much higher than coo ling system pressure that the compression will go to radiator but radiator water will never go the other way. The only way needing more than a gasket is if the head or block surface has been damaged and would need smoothed out.

Ken........remember in the long time ago, you used to haffta add "waterpump" lube to radiator water. Wynn's was a popular brand. Now dayz, anti-freeze already has wp lube. You do know how to make anti-freeze, don't you? Hide her nighty.......Dell (giggle)

P.S........the oil floating on the radiator water is probably a leakin' head gasket. Don't hurt to re-torque the head nuts or head bolts to 70ft/lbs, follow the diagram. Simple, eh? (and cheap)

Thanks for the information. I never considered the possibility of it coming from the around the rings and then through the head gasket. I don't know if it is an oil burner or not. He only uses it to haul maple sap out of the woods to be made into maple syrup. At least replacing the gasket is easy compared to the IH engines that I am familiar with - no valves to readjust. Ken....

Nice picture. Saves me time looking at head deciding best way to tork it down :)
If was a SBC would be no problem lol
