PTO handle keeps Disengaging

Finally get my '50 8N tractor to run and while mowing the PTO handle keeps disengaging. It will engage all the way to the back and doesn't seem difficult to push back. While mowing the PTO will stop and when I check the lever it is in the disengage position. Any thoughts?

et a good grip on the PTO shaft, push & pull to see if you can move it fore & aft.
Should not, if yes, then bearing/retainer/etc. needs repair.
