Starter spins but doesn't engage

New problem on different tractor. This one is a '48 front-mount, and has been a reliable tractor. But, today I used it for about an hour then parked it out of the way so I could
move some other tractors around. Tonight, when I went to start it, the solenoid would click and the stater motor would spin but it wouldn't engage and turn the engine over.
I tapped on the starter and rocked it around in gear to see if that would change anything but it didn't. This tractor has the original paint, and I hate to leave it out in the
weather this week. Any idea what is going on, and do I need to go ahead and remove the starter?

Here's the tractor. I've had it for about 5yrs and this is the first problem I've had with it. It was my dad's and granddad's before that.

Uhh....yeah. Good thing I didn't take the starter off! Lesson learned...., troubleshoot the basics, then post. I wasn't even thinking about the battery, thanks.
