Does this starter drive look OK?

1949 8N, used it most of the day, no problems. The last time I started it, it made a nasty noise on the starter side but it did start. I shut it off, figuring the starter
drive failed., but when I took the starter off it looked OK to me. Is there supposed to be about an inch gap on the end like this? Been a couple years since I replaced it
and I can't remember. I did look at the teeth on the flywheel and they appeared fine too so I put it back together and tried again, it whirs but doesn't engage. I have no
reason to believe the battery is low but it is on the charger now, not taking much juice but I'm stumped. What am I dealing with? Does the drive look OK? What should my
next step be tomorrow?
Thanks in advance.

Next step? A fishing expedition to see if you can get the pieces
out of the bottom of the bell housing with a magnet. :(
Some say you can leave them in there, but if you can get them
out you won't have to worry about whether they are right or wrong.

There is an easier way to get the parts out. Just pop the steering box and reach in and grab what you need. A tad bit hard if you have a sherman in the way.
