Starter switch

Question...if I remove the starter switch located directly in front of the shifter handle on a 9N, will that little "L" shaped rocker fall to the bottom of my transmission? I've got all the books, and I can't find an answer to my question. Reason I'm wanting to remove the switch? Tractor hasn't been used in months, and yesterday I went out to start her up, and the starter switch would not depress all the way. Seemed to me like it was sluggish, maybe gummed up? It would depress a little, but not enough to engage the starter. From diagrams, it looks like the switch I'm talking about uses a long rod to press the backside of the starter solenoid. Could this solenoid need replacing?

The thing you are calling a stater solenoid is actually the starter switch. Everything up to switch is just linkage to push the switch. Your tractor does not have a solenoid. That came in later models.

Mine didn't..Mine was not working when I got the tractor in 04-soon as I drove it home 10
miles, I removed the starter switch/button and swished it in gas then blew it out with
compressed air..been fine ever since.

There is a push switch on top of the transmission, that engages a rod internal to the tranny, that pushes another switch (which I was calling the solenode) mounted inside of the engine enclosure. Let's call this switch 1. This switch 1 ohmed with infinite resistance, and then to zero (dead short) when I pushed the plunger on its' backside. So in my mind, it should be a good switch, however, when I turn on the key and push switch 2 (on top of the tranny), switch 1 should close the contact sending power to the starter, and it does not. That's one problem. Problem two is I can send 12 volt power to the terminal on the starter, and it won't spin. And the key switch in functional. Thoughts?

BE absolutely positive that you have it in Neutral ..Don't want you to get ran over by the tractor----then jump across switch 1 with a
screwdriver==if it cranks this way, do what I said and remove the pushbutton and wash it
out...

I may have multiple problems. I removed the switch and after checking resistance with an ohmmeter, was able to "lock up" the plunger. I'm just going to order another one, however, using a jumper cable, I went from the plus side of the battery, right to the stud on top of the starter. Didn't turn over the motor. So I have the switch to replace and possibly the starter as well. It worked with no issues the last time I was running the tractor. Must be some bad karma.

Do you have a 6 or 12 volt system? 6 volt system would be a positive ground and 12 volt usually a negative ground.

"So I have the switch to replace and possibly the starter as well."

Or possibly just have a starter bendix hung in the flywheel.
Put the tractor in high gear and rock it back and forth with the
rear tire hard enough to turn the engine/fan then put it back in
neutral and try the starter again. Some times that's enough to
jar the bendix loose and the starter will work again.
