Tractor idenity help please.

Hey folks,
Still looking on repair help in my other thread, but thought maybe new thread for identifying would help a lot.

According to this site http://www.oldfordtractors.com/idhistory.htm

im thinking a 1945ish 9n (does have a loose ferguson) plate on front.

Sadly unless there is another one somewhere, the serial number isn't on there. Not sure if faded or if plate fell off, not even sure how many owners its been thru.

Is there another spot with any numbers, so far I havnt seen anything.

9N - 1939-1941
2N - 1942-1947
8N - 1948-1952

If you haven't done so already, go HERE to look up Ford N series serial numbers. Serial number should be on the left side of the block (as you sit on tractor) just below the head and behind the oil filter. If you don't have a serial number, you can get some good help identifying N's HERE.

Serial number is not on a plate, it's stamped into the block. May be covered with multiple layers of paint. See the photo on John Smith's Old Ford Tractor Site (2nd link I provided above) to see exactly where you should be looking.... It is also possible you have a replacement engine from a dealer that maybe didn't get stamped with anything...
 

I may be way off then. From the site suggested I thought it looked like the 9n 1945ish

Dang wish I would of went with the atv with dinky front loader trying to fix this thng is getting confusing. my car engine is easier to me then this old tractor lol.
 
Should be stamped right of the oil canister, above starter, below head, not on a plate, and not painted on.
 
Yeh the serial is worn off of it or something kinda make out maybe a 6 or a 8 but that's all we can see (and that could be wrong since faded so much.)

I give up on it, ill just buy 9n parts lol
 
As was said below, the 9Ns ended in early 42.
So you couldn't have a 45 9N.
If it is a 45 it is a 2N.
Mind you, 2N still used a 9N number in their serial # and were almost identical.
And if you think Ns get confusing wait till you get into some of the newer tractors.
Like how all Jubilees are NAAs but not all NAAs are Jubilees.
Or how Ford made two completely DIFFERENT 2000s and two different 4000s and two different 2110s and two completely different 4100s.
And how all 640, 650 and 660s are 600s - which are different than 601s and 800s and 801s and 700/701s and 900/901s.
And how all 4000s, 4100s, 4200s, 4410s, 4400s, 4500s, 4600s and 4610s are fundamently the same tractor. But different...

These motors get swapped occasionally so a late model block may be in an early model frame .

Some internal parts changed halfway through the 8n production .

The biggest thing is you have a FRONT mount distributor , 6 volt genny , late model 9n or technically a 2n which is a renamed 9n to get around war time sales laws , but not an early model 9n which went through a lot of small changes not limited to just electrical issues .
 

I cant remember to well due to doing a lot, but I thought when I bought it the guy said a 2n, but like I said i completely forgot what he said. But from pictures from websites etc all look wise resemble the 9n. So now im a bit confused as to 9n with 2n parts or 2n with 9n parts? I think if the numbers are close 9n wise would make it 1942

For all practical porpoises a 9n and a 2n are the same model .

An 8n was the next model in the series that shared half of the parts and closely resembled its predecessor

I don't think the genny is even Ford tractor.
Looks like maybe a Delco?
 
For what it is worth.....wire wheel the living daylights out of the serial number..then with a good mag glass...not readers mind you....have another shot at the number....you might get it in view...then...write it down!!...lol
 
It seems to have a mixture of 9n and 2n parts. The hood dog legs are 9n. looks like it has a pressurized radiator. That would be a
2n. The dash is 2n.

Both 9n and 2n tractors. the serial number started with 9n.

I believe you have a 1943 or early 1944 Ford 2 N. It has the later style grill, and they appear to be the smaller Ford sealed beam headlights,
not CM Halls. 1943 had a different radiator than the earlier models, of course any of these things might have been changed over the last
seventy years, but my guess is 1943.

If your talking the generator I believe the tags were black. (if mean connections to it all wires are green every where)

And Yes its a front mount dis/coil and 2/9N most parts I look up that's what they ask about. I do thank everyone for their contribution here. Makes finding things easier.

elco-Remy black tag is 6 volt & red tag is 12 volt
 
I'd agree with the others that it is not a '45 2n but rather an earlier model year. Did you try to determine the serial number? You cannot base a tractors model year based on what headlights are on it. Headlights were never factory installed, only available from a dealer as an optional accessory. Add to the mix the many lighting companies selling aftermarket ones so don't consider the lights as an identifier. The generator is not original and may be a 12-volt style. What type of battery do you have -6 volt or 12 volt? Like UD says, it appears to have a flip-up pan seat that didn't come out until the 8N but the seats are easily interchangeable. I-beam radius rods would indicate a pre-1944 2N model. The 16' front wheels were optional, the air cleaner tube is ho-made, the key switch is on the left side steering column -I think, and the starter button is on the top of tranny cover next to shifter. It looks like it also has the original rear hat rims so if they are loaded with calcium chloride or water -get rid of it now if you want to preserve the rims. I did not see your original post so what is it exactly you seek?

Battery is a 6v due to the old one same issue starting wise I had was 6v. So first thing I replaced was battery.
