Tire chains

I use my 8n for clearing snow and mowing pasture. I never get on road so is there any reason that leaving the chains on year round would hurt anything?

Your kidneys!!!

No reason at all to take them off just put them back on in a few months, as long as you don't mind the extra ROUGH ride and premature wearing out of both chains and tires (buying more) 3-4 times sooner.

Thanks for all the comments. I don't feel any different on how the tractor rides with or without the chains on. On the road sure it would be harder on everything. But in the pasture I can't even tell they are on.

I doubt they wear the tires much. You don't see skidder tires with chain marks worn into them and they wear chains permanently.
Soft ground or woods wont affect chain wear or ride much either.
Whether tires are loaded or unloaded chains will give you better traction too.
I would dislike the noise they always made. But if that doesn't bother you then I say run them.

I kept the chains on my 9N for over 15 years without any ill effects to the tires or chains. The chains were very heavy and I figured once I got them on straight and tight I was keeping them on. :)

I stand corrected on tire wear.
Just never been able to get them on snug enough since I don't put them on till it's too late (snowing and dang cold).

on the contrary, skidder tires get worn quite heavily by the chains. however, the chains are needed for traction, which is why many operators leave them on. even with the chains, the skidder tire can "last" for 20 years or more, albeit as a bald donut. in the end, the chains provide the traction, the tires support the vehicle.

that said, i leave the chains on my N permanently. i don't use it a tremendous amount (more in winter), so tire wear each year isn't significant. i believe if i were using it to plow fields, i'd remove the chains in the "summer".
