stuck oil filter on 1952 Ford 8N

Have a 1952 Ford 8N, changing oil but cannot remove a stuck oil filter. Cannot pry out of the canister. It spins on the center post but won't lift out. Does not have a flip-up handle, probably wrong filter but not sure that's the problem. Also, breather cap and oil level stick are open, so not a pressure issue. Any thoughts?

Correct, you're going to throw it away anyway. You're not the first one to have this problem.

Flat tip screwdriver from each side and gently pry up.
Do what you want with the filter, but take care not to damage
the lips of the canister so your new filter and seal don't leak.

Maybe you can tap it upward with a punch through the canister drain plug hole. Slide hammer with the right end fitting would work too.

Two brake adjust tools hanging over the top edges, 180 opposed
or two screw drivers so it comes up square -- not that square matters much.

I'll give it a shot - having to force something always gives me the willies ;-)

Don't worry, there's nothing holding it in but rubber and suction.

If your worried about breaking something, disconnect the two oil lines and remove the two bolts holding it to the motor; put it on the bench where its easy to work on. Be careful of those wires!

Thank you all for your enormously helpful advice, cannot tell you how awesome it is to have experienced people to fall back on (after 14 years still a newbie)
