Gas Geiser from Tank

I just bought this 8n a couple of months ago and was using it for disking. When it stated to sputter, I went for gas. Shut the tractor off and opened the door then took off gas cap. When I took the cap off gas shot out and vented over 4 feet in the air. the pressure was enough I could not get the cap back on. It vented like this for 10 -15 seconds, reminded me of taking off a radiator cap. Literally this thing was a geiser under pressure. If it was just a gas cap vent plugged it would of just hissed and been done. The only thing I can think of is the crankcase vent is plugged and it backed all the way through the carb and then fuel lines. Has anyone ever seen anything like this? Been on equipment for over 40 yrs and have not.

On the gas tank there is a dome just behind the fuel cap. that has a tiny hole that is supposed to serve as a vent. Being over the engine it gets really hot in the tank and can build pressure.

The OEM tank vent is plugged as nearly all are.

Install a vented cap and all will be fine.

As the others have said tank vent is plugged up and since the tank is right above the engine the tank got hot and gas started to boil and when you removed the cap it blew like old faithful

The reason that it vented for so long is that the gas was not able to boil under pressure. As soon as you released the pressure it started to boil and due to the low vapor pressure of gasoline it continued for a few seconds.

thanks everybody. What I get from this is go buy a vented cap and dont fill the tank all the way. Again, Thanks

See link. Ford offered a gas cap exchange program that is still effective at all New Holland dealers. Take your original cap in and they will exchange it for the new vented style. If they try to tell you it is no longer effective, they are being dishonest. I have a friend who works at my local CNH dealer and he said some may try to tell you that then say they can 'order' you a new one and of course charge you $60 for it. Some guys just drill a few small holes in the top of the original one too.

Tim, link takes to to Antique Tractor Pics with blank screen.

Can you post pic of old cap or the new cap.

Would like to compare to what my old Heinz 57 N has.
