A guy wants to sell me a 3 pt boom pole for $50 bucks. 7 foot long. I could think of some uses for it, but is this a reasonable price? It is not homemade and what could it handle...500 pounds, maybe? Please
advise.

I have one from TSC @ $130 or so and picked up my 6" brush hog with zero problems.
For $50 I say go for it.

Around here they sell for around $100, so I also say go for it! I use mine very frequently, just yesterday to unload a 612 pound (according to the book) piece of equipment.

If not damaged it should be worth $50.

Most readily available boom poles are rated for 500 lbs. on the end hook and 750 lbs, on the short hook.

Don't mistake the boom pole"rating" for what the tractor it is mounted on will be able to lift.

I purchased a used one for $50 a couple years ago. Used it to pick up a cast iron tub and other scrap iron. spose it could pick up my KK shreader for cleaning and blade sharpening as well. PLanned on using it to pull a hot roasted pig out of the pit too. But coals burned so low that it wasn't too hot when we went to pick it out anyway.
It's worth it I think.

1001 uses for a 3-pt crane.
I just had a Brush Hog delivered and the trucker asked me if I had a way of unloading it. Yep! :)

I used mine to position some fat cedar bridge beams too.

If it's a factory built one $50 is a bargain. A KingKutter goes about $125 new.
I don't have a loader so for me a boom pole has been invaluable.

As others have say Handy. You can't go wrong for 50 bucks. It's not a lot of money to have sitting around and if you use it a few time a year you'll be glad you had it. Weather you have to move a loader frame or load a 2 bottom plow on a truck and they are great for getting into tight places.

I got mine for $25 at an auction. I like using it. The tool that you need, and do not have, are both worthless and expensive.

very handy
I have a couple. Even with loaders here, they are still handy.
just saw one at my local implement dealer ( a little more expensive than TSC, new-$185)
My latest project is to add some side bars and chains to one, to lift my old horse drawn style drag off the ground when I cross yard.

wish I could find an old one for $50.
I'd cut it off aft of the triangle to have a shorter one for odd jobs.

Don't worry about the weight rating. A commercial one
will handle enough to lift the front of the tractor off the ground,
or get the relief squalling if you try too much. The long lever thing........
