Model 138976 -- can't find anywhere to check or add fluid to the hyd pumps..Steer handles are bot lined up - so just searching for answers and want to check fluid levels and add if needed..Any info appreciated..

One of those deals where I'm asking for my brother so I don't know. He said he has had it up in the air from all ends and is yet to see a sight glass a plug or anything to check the fluid level..he said something about two tubes that appear to be vent tubes..and appeared to be no way to add fluid through these tubes IF you could check it and find it to be low..

My guess is that they are sealed. I had a Toro with no method to check or add/change the hyd oil. Was not an issue, as those hydros lasted longer than the junk Kohler engine. But that is another story.

Tom,He said something about two tubes that appear to be vent tubes..
Thats kinda how my Bad Boy is but the vent tubes hook to two very small plastic tanks about a 1/2 pint cap that are empty when cold, and just a trace when warm.Clear hoses? So if it has some bubbles of oil in the hose when warm it should be ok.

Any idea why the steer levers are not even-He says that when u first start off the are ok-they point at each other and it steers correctly---But as it gets warmed up you have to pull the left lever all the way back and push the right one all the way forward to go straight....this is why he started looking for some way to check fluid level..I have tinkered with all other kinds forever but know nothing about ZTs..

You say after it warms up he has to pull the left lever all the way to the rear to keep going straight? If the left lever is pulled all the way to the rear the left wheel should be spinning backwards. It could be low causing that but I don;t believe so.See if he can squirt any hyd oil in the L side vent tube with a oil can or a old style ketchup bottle.

Oh,I don;t believe that model number is still correct.Heres the site for the manuals.

I have found that problem with ZTRs if one of the hydros is running hotter than the other. I found a heat shield missing on one of mine. The left hydro would quit about half way through the yard and I had to let it cool. It was right in the line of fire from the cooling fins on the flathead twin engine back cylinder. It was heating that hydro more than the other.

Check condition of the fan, chaff or dirt keeping it from cooling, and even an engine that's running too hot. If it is blowing super heated air in the area of that unit things will be affected.

I had a buddy who just went through this. He found the tranny on his brand new $8,000 hydrstatic lawn tractor was sealed so he could not change or top up the fluid, even though the company that made the tranny admitted that it would last a lot longer if he did! Their excuse for this sorry state was that the were just building what the customers wanted, and in this case, that seemed to be sealed trannies that would need replacement every 5 or so years.

Apparently this is a common problem. He was able to find details on the net of where to drill a drain hole and what oil to use, and modify his and get it on a regulor service schedule.
