Has anybody ever made this repair

2N Magneto drive assy- Have 2 mag drive assys 1 has all but completely seized up the matched set of gears are fine. I think the problem on both are the bushings, The one that is about seized completely must have the bushings balled up. The other one is on a running tractor and the drive assy is emitting a galling noise, smooths out then growl and smooth out which I think is from the bushings. My 2 fold question how do I get the bushings out? It looks as if I will need to press the gear drive from the mag coupling and not bust the cast housing in the process. Second ? is where the cam and the drive mate the lugs are not a different size as the drive lugs are on a front drive dist, is this a correct deduction? Rather the lugs seem to be off center, ya or na. on off center.

HOW could the drive lugs be shaped any differently between the mag drive and the distributor, considering both units fit interchangeably and the lugs of either engage the slot in the cam?

BOTH have identically-sized lugs that are offset from the centerline of the shaft or gear.

Thanks Bob, so you are saying the lugs are exactly the same on the mag drive as they are on a F/M dist? They look the same but I will put cal on ea one. Do you have both so you could tell me for sure or have a photo of them side by side. I havent had a F/M on the place for years but I though their lugs were diff width as so not to be put it on wrong. And as you say off center would not work. I agree. What I might be seeing is a sudden stop of the drive and movement of the cam may have bent the lug just enough to make them look off center to my eyes.

"And as you say off center would not work." He did NOT say that. He said that they ARE off center & they are & that is how they were designed & how they have been working since 1939.

I have this photo saved of a mag setup I have on the shelf, but it doesn't show the drive tangs real clearly.
BTW, I didn't mark it "8N", the P.O. did.

WW2N,The distributor drive on a feont mount 9N ,2N,8N are of set to fit the camshaft drive ,so is the magneto drive. They are identical as for as the off set drive goes.

I would take them to a good machine shop and have the bushings replaced. I would be afraid to break something that is hard to find. Mine on my 8n works just great. The tractor came with an industrial engine with the magneto. I like the mag over my other side mount dist. machine.

Ya not a good look but thanks I will have to do it by feel, cant find much on google or other forums either.
