Oil Canister Top Bolt Gasket

Recently changed oil and cleaned out canister on my 8N. Reused the gasket under the top bolt and when I tightened bolt a half moon piece of the gasket tore and squeezed out from under the bolt.

I'm guessing my gasket was worn out. I'm seeing replacement gaskets for $5.00 each. I hate to pay 5.00 for a gasket that probably costs .25 to make. Did a forum search and saw suggestions to use a copper washer. Before I get out to hardware store, do you guys have any other suggestions? Will brass substitute for copper and seal? Hate to think I will need a new 5.00 gasket when I change the oil filter. Maybe a flat washer on top of the gasket under the bolt will prevent bolt from tearing the new gasket. All comments apprieciated.

had the same problem on some of my tractors, after replacing gaskets from over tightening decided a piece of soft plastic would work. made some gaskets up from pop bottle plastic, then moved over to quart oil cans (plastic) the flat sides were easier to cut into washers, now have a supply to use when changing oil etc.

The OEM gasket is compressed paper. Use it and it will not leak.

Substitutes, copper, aluminium, O-ring, etc., may or may not work.

a) I have never had that gasket and mine does not leak
b) If I wanted one I would cut one from the cardboard of a case of Bud

Take a closer look at the bolt. I expect that you will fine that there is a compressed paper gasket on it.

Without the gasket it will leak if your engine has oil pressure and the oil line and canister is not plugged as some are.

BigYoung..........NO BRASS, use COPPER 'cuz it is softer. howsomevers, cut one from cardboard cereal box will also work. Or go shopping at Ace Hdwr store fer their asst box. Simple, eh? .......the amazed Dell

(quoted from post at 22:21:26 04/13/15) I will look for it, next oil change due any weekend now.
I still say Bud case cardboard good gasket stock.
he highest pressure the gasket will ever see is tightening the bolt down against it. Oil pressure wise, that would be the filter resistance to flow & the output orifice, since the canister output is a open ended line.

I scored a 7/16 x 1" fiber/compressed paper washer that fits tight to the bolt for 45 cents at Ace Hardware. Good to know that a beer case will work in a pinch. Good to know I don't have to pay $5 and shipping.

Thanks for all suggestions.

Back about 10-15 years ago you use to get that gasket/washer with a new oil filter but they stopped doing that -most likely a cost savings decision. Nevertheless, the good news is that you can still get one from your local CNH (Case/New Holland) dealer. See LINK at bottom. It is Ford part number O1A-6749, made of a composite fiber material, like a hard rubber, and works perfectly. A steel washer will not work and thus leak. Copper will work but use a paper gasket with it under the bolt head. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN!!!

Tim, I pick up my filters from Napa. The last few I picked up had all of the gaskets and seals included. Including the thin copper washer.

Also only tighten it snug. No need to wrench it to 50ft/lbs.

Wolfman-
What is the NAPA part number? I usually buy the FRAM CP-3 and it will have the large rubber gasket the goes underneath the lid and same for ones I get at my local CNH dealer. FRAM was the original supplier to Ford for oil filters -look at the decal on the lid. There is a CP model but it does not have the little handle that assists when lifting out to replace. The CP-3 one does. I have an original FRAM orange NOS one I am saving for early 9N restoration. I have not ever tried anything other than those listed but I do have a list of many makes that supposedly will work. I once did use a copper washer but it too still leaked.

Wait! There is supposed to be a gasket under the bolt? Well durn, nobody told me about that one either!

I didn't even know the oil cup for the air filter was supposed to have one until someone on here brought it up!

Any more "gaskets" I need to learn about? I'm all Jethro Bodine on the sparkies...but not the gaskets...lol. We'll have to start calling you the "gasket meister too...lol. :D
