oil pump nightmare

i needed my oil pump rebuilt so i bought the pump kit and a 9/16 reamer for the bushing . i installed the bushing and then took it to an older guy that sells part and works on N's along with the reamer . the older guy said it would only take a few minutes to ream . he attached the bushing guide , put his reamer in a 1/2'' drill and started to ream . he told me he had to grind off the reamer to fit his drill which got my attention real fast . he started to ream the bushing and his reamer was so out of round and dull it was jerking him and shook tools off his bench . he said i just sharpened that thing ! i suggested 4 times that he use my reamer but he would have none of it . now im getting really nervous, he finally got it through the bushing . i grabbed my parts and got out of there . i get home measured the bushing and its worse than the one i took out . i got the new gears out of the package to look them over . i put the gear on the drive gear shaft ( the one that is supposed to be pressed on ) turned it upside down and the gear fell off. now i have to send back the rebuild kit , order a new one , order the reamer guide . if you dont know about bushings , reamers , and gear backlash you might want to have a machinist do the work . reamer 40.00 , parts 45.00 guide kit 117.00

Check with TOH, who posts here, and ask if he has time to help you. Then you wouldn't need the tools you don't have competent help to work with. Unless you are going to do a number of these/go into the business you are FAR better off to hire a pro to do your one, single pump.

I have no use for hackmaster machinists or mechanics. Reaming requires that the part to be reamed is clamped securely in a fixture or vise and the reamer is set up in eth machine spindle SQUARE to the bore to b e reamed. You can't get it square and perpendicular by 'eyeballing' it. Plus, a hand held drill motor will walk and thus cause the hole to be out-of-round (egg shaped). I'd demand the guy buy you a new bushing and take it to a reputable machinist. It needs to be done on a Bridgeport. You might get away with hand reaming it but you still risk cocking it and getting it out of square.
