Starter - don't understand

1949 8N , 6v. Used the tractor yesterday. Ran great. Went to start this morning, cranked too weakly to start. Put battery
charger on, came back in 3 hours, still too weak but turned over a few revolutions. Battery reads 6.3v. Grabbed a 12v to
jump reading 12.77. Nothing, not even noise of spinning. Pulled the starter. Spins when jumped by both these batteries.
Polished starter mating surfaces and reinstalled, jumped using same points of contact when tested on ground, nothing.
Tried grounding to other frame locations, nothing. Even tested continuity of jumper cables which are fairly new and they are
fine. Bedix was extended (withdrawn) when removed and reinstalled. That shouldn't matter should it? Stumped.

Are you saying to hooked a 12 volt battery right to your 6 volt battery?? If yes that is a good way to get hurt and have that battery 6 volt that in explode in your face and that causes a guy yo go blind.
That said battery cable connections are likely to be the problem or the cables have gone bad which you can not see with your eyes. On 6 volts the battery cables need to be 0 or 00

No, I know better. Starter post and frame on one end battery the other. Done it several times over the years.

billybuck.........ummm?? you did remember to turn your ignition key ON didn't you? You do know yer Bendix must be SQUEEKY clean don't you? Spray'er good with BRAKE cleaner, letter drip dry. Bendix should be on end of LONG starter armature shaft so it is easily slipped over the flywheel ring gear. Yes, cleaning the end of the starter motor and the hole in the tranny is good too doo. The 8-in screws don't transfer much amps, need the full face of the tranny. Its un-clear where you jumped yer 12-volt battery too. Surprizingly enuff, yer starter motor don't care positive (+) or negative (-) ground just go direct to the starter motor stud. DO NOT jump to the solenoid batt connection. As an reminder, the little middle solenoid terminal MUST face the engine block where it is hard to gitt too. The little middle terminal is wired thru the dash panel to the BIG thumb push button by the tranny shifter. Final comment, it is semi-common fer battery acid to gitt INSIDE yer insulated wire cable to the solenoid and corrode and cause the cable to bee too weak fer yer starter motor to turn but will still bee goot enuff to run yer sparkies. .......Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister

Dell, at this point I'm just trying to excite the starter now that it's back in place. I'm bypassing the solenoid. Jumper cable black to verticle main starter post red to frame (tried red to starter mounting bolt too which worked with starter lying on the ground), other end black to Pos bat post red to Neg. I'm realize the starter doesn't care. I can not get a sound from it now that is back on the tractor. Any other ideas?

Sounds like a starter issue. To verify, do voltage drop tests on the positive and negative side. For voltage drop tests to be accurate, the circuit must be loaded ie (tranny in neutral and starter switch pushed).

Problem solved; insufficient ground of jumper cable on tractor frame. One of the disadvantages of a recently painted tractor. Having battery load tested today. Doesn't owe me anything; from Feb '08!
