on going discussion between two brothers.
my brother swears this 9N had a step up step down Sherman. I have no recollection of it. is it possible that the Sherman lever is behind the tool box? and yes he said it was a lever not a cable rig.
thanks.

I don't think it is. I've had a few & pretty sure it would be visable.
What's that other rig on it?

Edited to say I just noticed what looks like that steering column add-on with the Sherman stats for speed or something. (know what I mean Vern?) :)

If it had a lever operated sherman the handle would be visible in that photo. There are other lever operated auxiliary transmissions that could have a shift handle on the other side of the tractor such as a Hupp or Howard.

My eyes aren't so good, so it's hard to say but I think I can see
the outline of part of a Sherman handle. The part I highlighted.
The dark spot from that point down looks like it was leaking oil
there too, although I'm not sure how/why that would happen.

It isn't oriented the same as the one on this 8N though.

I was wondering about the oil stain too. could it be from the steering column? I have used three different magnifying glasses to no certainty. too bad digital cameras were not available 50 years ago.

"could it be from the steering column?"

Very possible it is from the steering gearbox.
