Parts help?

Hi folks. This place is always tops for helping with old tractor parts.

We are rebuilding my old 49 8N. And I need the long two diameter pin which holds the base of the top link rocker to the casting of the tractor.

The proper pin is about a foot long and is large diameter where it passes through the first casting on the tractor and through the bottom of the third link rocker, and the end is of smaller diameter(3/4 or 7/8 inch) where it passes through the second casting and accepts a linch pin as a retainer.

I have searched all the parts suppliers found via google, and none list this pin.

Any help in locating the proper piece will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

A note of explanation: When I purchased the tractor twenty some years ago, there was a short home made pin in this location with a spring clip in each end.

One night in the dark, I was out pulling a single point ripper with the tractor when I lost one of the spring clips and the third link base pin slipped to the side. Of course, the pressure of the ripper immediately broke the third link rocker and bent the shaft inside the large coil spring for the draft control.

I purchased a new third link rocker and a local machine shop built a new shaft to replace the bent one. But I am not putting her back together without the proper pin in the base of that third link rocker.

The part number for the long pin is: 8N486A

Depending on the serial number of your '49 8N, that short pin may well have been factory equipment as the long pin was replaced by the short one (8N486B) at serial # 237,337.

That long pin was part of the Ferguson lawsuit against Ford and did get replaced by the short pin as MB stated below. They do not make that long pin anymore, only the short one. The original long pins do pop up on epay now and then. I have my original on my early '48 8N but it is frozen up. I bought another original off epay a few years ago in case I booger up the frozen one trying to get it loose. The trick is not to crack the cast iron housing while working on it. It is a big area to try to heat up evenly. Will need a good torch that gets hot enough -propane or butane will not work. So if you have a long pin, keep it free to turn so it doesn't freeze up.
