8N missing on number one cylinder

I recently replaced the 12v top mount coil and distributor on my 8n tractor. It will crank and run, but is missing on the # one
cylinder. I'm getting no fire from the dist. cap on that cylinder.
I adjusted the points from the way it was set when I rec'd it new. Would this cause the cap not to fire on that cyl if the points are not set right? Thanks

oldtrkden,First,Swap the #1 plug wire and #2 plug wire and see it the miss goes to #2.Or replace the #1 wire with a different one or a new one and try that.Next do the same with the 1 spark plug and #2 spark plug.Last,Check compression on the #1 cylinder as it could be low .

oldtrkden.........um?....gonna guess yer "top mount coil" is the weird 4-nipple front mount coil. ALWAYS use COPPER core sparkie wire. DO NOT USE modern "string" core sparkie wire 'cuz the string (actually fiber glass) BREAKS inside the insulation and will make intermittent contact. Modern cars with computer controlled everything haffta have the HOT sparkies attenuated by the carbon core resistance otherwize computer goes NUTS. Just incase you missed it, yer 8N-Tractor does NOT have a computer.

You report you adjusted the points the way when you rec'd it new. And ask would that cause the #1 cyl not to fire if points are not set right? Well maybe. First off, check yer sparkie gap = 0.025" We recommend AutoLite 437's gapped 0.025". Sometimes even NEW sparkies are BAD rite outta the box. Thats simpler than swappin' sparkie wires. 2nd, the weird 4-nipple dizzy is designed to have the points (0.015") adjusted on the kitchen table. Just un-snapple yer capple and remove 2-bolts and walk to kitchen. Replace and/or adjust the points (0.015") Remember to "polish" the INVISIBLE corrosion from between the points. I clamp the corner of $1-bill between the points and pull. Iff'n yer really cheep, tear a strip from HEAVY brown paper grocery sack and use that. Installation is a reversal of the removal ...except... finger start the 2-bolts and install the ROTOR. Now rotate the rotor so the TANG on the back of the dizzy fits into the OFF-SET slot of the camshaft. Now tighten the 2-bolts and re-snapple yer capple. Simple, eh? ........HTH, Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister

I have no spark from the cap. It has a copper wire and I've tried a different wire, but no spark to the plug.

So....at the cap, plug wire off, .....you have spark to three nipples...and none to one?......how are you checking??

With the tractor running, I have a plug wire on number one nipple and get no spark thru it. I know the wire is good. Thanks
I have also tried a different dist cap.

Check the point gap on all four lobes of the distributor. check for side play of shaft in distributor.

I had the same problem with my '46 2N. It was the new distributor shaft. I tried changing the plug wire, crossing the plug wires, replacing the rotor, replacing the cap, you name it. Never could get fire from #1 nipple. Replaced the old shaft and it ran perfect ever since. Threw the new one in the trash!
