I have a 1941 9n with a single pole generator front mount distributer six volt battery. I wired it like the diagram I got off yesterdays tractor I assume it is stock like it was in 1941. The trouble I have the tractor runs fine starts good but when I shut the key off the amp gauge discharges and will run down the battery. I took the cover off the cut off relay switch and the points are stuck together after I pull them apart the amp gauge goes back to normal. Their seems to be current at the points all the time if I push the points together when the tractor is not running it will spark and stay closed until I pull them apart. Again I assume this cut off relay is just a electromagnet and completes the circuit when the generator puts current to it and should release when the generator or tractor stops, again this is what I think and might have the wrong idea. I have tried everything I know to fix this situation including filing the points on the cut off relay. Tried tracing the current back from the resister block and the only thing I can come up with is the amp gauge might be bad and feeding back but it is new. Tried disconnecting the wire on the generator when the tractor is not running to see if the generator might be shorted out but that was not it, if I remove the wire form the amp gauge it will kill the power to the relay and operate normal but then the amp gauge will not work. Is their any way I can test the amp gauge to see if it is shorted out other buying another new one? Your suggestion's would be greatly appreciated.
