Recently bought a 52 N.
The guy had a brand new alternator with it.
I was going to install it but I only see one place for the battery wire and the old one has 2 wires.
Is this the wrong one?

othing is wrong with it. It is a one wire alternator.

The difference is your new is a one wire. That means the regulator self
excites when engine rpms increase.no extra wires needed.
You old one is a three wire. The internal regulator has to be wired to you
ignition switch to make it work.

Parrott.........ummm, notta fan of 1-wire alternator conversions 'cuz you haffta zing yer COLD engine to about 1800-rpms before it self-excites. Thats about 3/4-throttle. Most good N-Engines start at 1/3-throttle and seldom gitt to 1/2-throttle. So you end-up with DISCHARGED 12-volt battery. .......HTH, Dell, a 12-volt advocate for the right reasons

Thanks for all the info. The one on it is working, was just wondering why the new one only had 1 wire.

all are not created equal, I just converted to 12V one wire and it charges right at start-up

Dune Country, how would you know it always charges right at start up of you don't have a working idiot light or a volt meter?

Sometimes people get lucky with the 1 wire conversion, but it's better to wire it the way it was designed to be wired. It's really not very hard. It will charge better, be more reliable and you can have your idiot light working, so you will know that it's charging and not just guess at it. It's really quite easy to wire it the way it was intended to. The batt connection goes straight to the battery connection on the starter. Terminal 2 is the voltage sense signal that goes to a battery connection as close to the positive battery post as possible. Terminal 1 goes to one side of the idiot light, the other side of the idiot light goes to a switched 12 volts. Some people recommend adding a diode in the idiot light circuit to prevent backfeeding current while the enging is shut down. The hardest thing about the conversion is the alternator mount. The wiring is pretty easy and simple. Why someone would choose to limit their success with a 1 wire setup is beyond me.
