belt question

When I bought my 41 9n the belt was really loose with no adjustment left. Took the belt off and it has no numbers but as loose as it was I would be thinking it was not the correct belt to start with. I took a piece of string and run around all the pulleys with the alternator pushed all the way in and the string measured 40 1/2 inches long. All the belts I have seen online at different places were 43 to 45 inches long. So can anyone point me in the right direction?
 
since it originally came with a genny, lets see your setup. mounts may be odd or pulley wrong.

in the end.. you can buy belts by the centimeter usually.. so you do have options.

I have a 9N with an alt. It's at the farm and I am at work, if no one else answers this, I will let you know this afternoon.

i AM PURT NEER SURE ON A b BELT YOU ADD 2" TO THE MEASUREMENT (sorry cap lock on). 40 1/2" would be 42 1/2" B belt.. Funny way they do it but that's how they do it...
 
I think I could live with that. I had 42 inch wrote down on a bunch of notes I had but wasn't sure what it was. Could be the length of rope the wife will use if I don't quit spending so much time and money on the tractor.......
 
Just a comment on measuring for "v-belts",it works very well to use a 1/2 inch wide metal tape,thread it around pulleys with tape flat,[ works for all sizes] this measure will give the correct length.
