Ford 9N Tractor Questions

I recently purchased a Ford 9N Tractor, as I am very new to owning a tractor I have a few questions that some of you maybe able to help me with.
First question is what is the typical issues found on the 9N Tractor that I may want to look for, or forward to running into?
Second question - Brakes, it seems to not have any, as it was set up with a box blade on the 3 point hitch, and is clutch I believe the original owner just never really needed to replace the pads as he used the blade to stop the machine.
My question is how difficult is it to replace the brakes, and is there any parts I should have on hand when I start the brake replacement process I see you can purchase just the pad with rivets but, not knowing the condition of the shoes their-selves I should probably opt for the whole replacement pad and shoes. Breaking the tires off the tractor will be a job on its own so I want to make sure that there is nothing in there I could run into not having on hand that may be in need of replacement as well, would rather do it all at once rather than take the tires off twice. Also I here that brakes are not great on these type of tractors anyways because of them being manual and not hydrolic is this true or will a new set of pads be worth the time. Thanks in advance, Jeremy

" I recently purchased a Ford 9N Tractor,"

Congrats! You're going to need manuals: see tip # 39 at the link.

" First question is what is the typical issues found on the 9N Tractor"

See tip # 40. Too many new 2/9/8N tractor owners think they can just jump on the tractor & & drive off every time every day w/o a thought given to the detailed & frequent maintenance requirements of these tractors.

" My question is how difficult is it to replace the brakes"

On a 1-10 scale, 3 or 4, w/ an oil change being a 1 & sleeve replacement a 10.

" is there any parts I should have on hand when I start the brake replacement process "

My advice is to pull it down BEFORE you order anything. At a minimum, replace all the springs & have the shoes re-bonded. But, when you pull the drums off, you will probably find that the reason for the brake failure is leaky seals & those will need to be replaced as well.

As to new vs rebuilt parts.......I’ve been working on old cars, trucks & tractors now for over 50 years. Whenever possible, I get OEM component parts rebuilt. Given the high probability that any new component part purchased for an N tractor is made somewhere overseas w/o adequate quality control, chances are very good that you will be disappointed. If you do not have a local rebuild shop, give these guys a call for a quote & shipping info:

Automotive Manufacturers Inc
2400 N Lombardy St Richmond, VA 23220

(804) 321-6861

They do mail order work. They rebuild carbs, clutches, pressure plates, water pumps, alternators, generators, starters & reline brakes.

What Bruce (VA) says is good sound advice. There is also a link at the bottom here to take you to the sponsors of this site who supply parts. J & D Productions made a bunch of do-it-yourself tractor videos and will help you do the task of everything from engine rebuild to hydraulic system. They make one on doing the brakes on 9N/2Ns and 8Ns and NAAs too but it isn't shown on the list so contact them to order one. There are many safety factors to be aware of as an N-Owner so get the manuals and read religiously.

Thanks very much guys, I really appreciate all the input you have given. Im a first time tractor owner, I have been a automotive and Marine Mechanic for many years but, as tractors are a new form of beast to me always like a first hand view of what to expect. I purchased the Tractor mainly to move boats around as I own a boat restoration business and its always tight parking when the lots full, wasn't exactly sure what direction to go as far as tractors but, the N9 really seems to handle great steering wise, just have to get the brakes to go along with it. As it does have a box blade on the 3 point hitch I am able to use this as my back up brakes even if the new brakes are not as good as I need at least for now. Will think about upgrading to a newer model with hydrolic brakes in the future. As I figure everything out as I go Im sure many more questions will popup in the future. Thanks again, everyone..

Welcome to the wonder world of Ford Ns. I've owned a '41 9N for about 25 years, it was my first tractor, although I grew up on a small farm and we always had 3 - 4 smaller tractors, but never an N. My biggest issue with it has always been the state of tune and getting it started. When it's properly tuned it starts and runs fine. Amazing for a piece of machinery that old. Brakes? Never had any, never really needed them, just have to anticipate stops. I decided long ago not to mess with them since folks here say they don't work well when they are replaced/rebuilt. My 8N has great brakes, but still hardly use them, forget sometime they are there. Disclaimer: my land is flat.

Don't hesitate to ask any question, we were all new owners at one time and the experts are here to help.
