crankshaft 8N

I tore apart a 48' 8N to do a rebuild, it is a front mount dizzy.
The motor sounded good other than a light knock. When I got to tearing it apart I discovered it had a bad rod bearing. The rod bearings are .020 already and as much play that was in the bearing, I think it would be lucky to get it cleaned up at .040 So I have a few choices one would be have the journal welded then recut to whatever the rest of the rods end up being. Or find a better crank to start with. Do the front mount distributor engines use the same crank as the side mount engines? I used the search option and have been reading as much as I can about rebuilds.....Mark

have it mic'd by a shop and let them yell you what it needs. Odds are good it can be reground.

Not sure where your at but I have a parts 8N that still has the crank shaft in it but shipping can be a killer. I am in Missouri by the way

I agree with TOH, take it to a machine shop. If my memory serves me correct you can get it turned up to 60 thousandths and bearings are available for that size. I recently had one
turned that I just "knew" it wouldn't clean up and be useable, but it turned out like new once the machine shop did their magic. However, not all parts suppliers carry the 60
thousandths bearings, but I know their out there if you look. So if you check one parts book and it only goes up to 40, don't give up.

Clevite .060 under rod bearings are available from this site for $11.59 per journal. The Clevite part number for the L-head rod bearings is CB-200 P and any shop that rebuilds engines should be able to order them.
