Starting problems Ford 600

I can't get my 600 to start. When I turn the key it sounds like the starter is turning but the motor doesn't turn over. Could this be the starter or the solenoid or something more?

So you do not have the correct stater button right?? If it sounds like it the starter is spinning but not engaging the flywheel ring gear the battery could be to weak and needs charged or the bendex maybe bad.

It was running just before this happened. It choked out as it was still cold outside. when it stopped I decided to put more fuel in the tank. Then went to restart the tractor and just the spinning sound.

If something has happened to the charging system and the battery if weak it could well do just that

Charge battery, while it is charging, pull the starter, just an electrical and 3 fastners.

Might be as old says, weak battery, could be rusty greasy drive gear, might be no driven gear :)

leeman........you complain "the starter is turning but the motor doesn't turn over"........then ask "could this be the starter solenoid or something more?"......umm? would you believe the starter Bendix drive??? The Bendix drive must be squeaky clean, NO LUBE ennywharr. Squirt yer starter drive with brake cleaner fluid and re-install. While a discharged battery could be part of yer problem but as described I'd bet on DIRTY Bendix drive. CAUTION: many autopart stores only sell thin 12-volt battery cable. Yer 6-volt starter motor needs "0" (ought) thick as yer thumb battery cable. ........HTH, electrical Dell

The the starter is spinning but the bendix is not engaging. While you could have a bad bendix or dirty shaft, the problem is most likely due to low voltage. That is likely caused by:

1. A weak battery (charge it & check it per tip # 49. Or get it load tested.)*

2. Dirty grounds/connections (remove the cables & clean the connections)

3. Bad cables or incorrect sized cables (replace them - see tip # 41)**

4. Bad ground between the starter & the block. (pull the starter away from the block & clean the mating area - see tip # 36)

* No matter what else you do, the battery must be fully charged. A float charger is helpful; not a trickle charger, but a float charger. (I use Battery Tenders on all my tractors) If you need to jump it, see tip # 43. No, it doesn’t need to be 12v. Plenty of N’s start just fine on 6v in below 0* temps. Your battery loses 33 percent of its power when the temperature dips below freezing, and over 50 percent of its power when the temperature falls below zero. A fully charged battery will not freeze until -76°F; however, a fully discharged battery can start to freeze at 32°F. So……keep the battery fully charged!

** You can't see corrosion under the insulation.

OK battery fully charged and still the same thing. Would you suggest the starter solenoid as next option?

Jump the solenoid and see what happens.
