Cover me "I'm going in"

Had enough of the 3 point brake system (drop the blade)
Rear seals and brakes
1 wheel off and it looks likes new hubs will be ordered tomorrow,
I did find 2 steel shims between trumpet and brake backing plate,
I think there is just supposed to be a paper gasket there, correct?
And 1 steel shim and 1 paper between bearing and race?
I know I can figure out the preload, just wondered if the 2 steel should be replaced with just paper gasket and a touch of sealer?

I prefer the steel shims as they do not compress further as you tighten the bolts. The number of steel shims is not important, use whatever is necessary to give the correct bearing preload. Also assemble the backing plate with shims and gaskets and then put on the brake drum and see that the drum does not scrape on the backing plate. This assembly/reassembly process may need to be repeated a few times to get the correct preload and correct brake drum spacing.

Adjust the shims to get the pre-load right.
John Smith has instructions [b:cadc28795d]here.[/b:cadc28795d]

John may also have some quality used brake drums instead of
cheap aftermarket ones. Check [b:cadc28795d]here.[/b:cadc28795d]

Thanks Paul,Royse and Ed
Royse,John Smith's directions are the ones I'm following, his 1st picture of reassembley only shows a paper gasket between trumpet and brake backing plate,so I think that's what I'll do and move the steel shims between bearing and race as it should be for "preload". I'll get the other wheel disassembled today and clean everything up,while I'm waiting on the new hubs,I'll set preload when hubs get here, thanks
