Rear wheels won't turn...

The rear end is up on blocks, still attached to the rest of the tractor. I took the left axle housing off and the ring gear out. The bearings and cones on both sides were pitted, so I replaced them.
Then I left axle housing on and tightened all the nuts and admired by work. Then I noticed no brakes or clutch pedals.

After I put all the parts on and tightened all the nuts, again, the rear wheel/rim will not turn. I loosened the nuts and then the wheel turns by hand and the wheel on the other side goes in the opposite direction.

Am I correct in thinking that when tightened the ends of the axle are being mashed together and that a shim or two would fix the problem?

If both back wheels are off the ground and yo spin one wheel one way the udder vheel will spin in opposite direction.
When working on any machine its all ways good to have a service manual at your disposal

Yes, I know the wheels are supposed to turn in opposite directions. I read the manual.

That's not the problem I described or asked about.

Neither wheel will turn when all the nuts (the ones that hold on the axle and brakes) are tightened.

f "...ends of the axle are being mashed together...", then when in neutral both wheels will turn together in same direction.

hat's sounds right. Neither wheel turns when everything is torqued to specs. There must be something else going on then.

I'll take it all apart and then put it back together and see what happens.

(quoted from post at 15:59:11 03/27/15) So is that why u took it apart--wheels wouldn't turn??
he bottom link was leaking so I took off the whole thing, did a brake job, replaced the gasket for the bottom link, torqued it, then cleaned up the whole thing. Then I saw the bearings (BB4221B) on the ring gear and case assembly (9N4204) were pitted, so I changed both of those and the cup (BB4222) on the left side. (Right side later.)

Before I took it apart, if you turned one wheel the other one went the opposite direction like it is supposed to do. Now when all the nuts are torqued to spec, nothing turns. When loose, everything turns correctly.

Put it in neutral and then try to turn the wheels. The one that wont turn is the problem, I am guessing you have a brake too tight. Or try turning it without the brake drums on,that will eliminate the brakes as the problem.

hanks. I'll loosen the brake shoes on that side and try again tomorrow.

According to the guy at the local tractor parts supplier I could be putting too much load on the bearings and that a few spacers/shims/whateveryouwanttocallthem should probably take care of the problem. The old bearings were worn a bit and the new ones are new with no wear. The clue was that things turned when the nuts were loose but not when tightened to specs.

Tomorrow, as soon as the tractor is in the shade, I'll put in a couple of shims and tighten things up. If still not turning then I'll try a couple more. If still not turning.......
