I own an 8n built in 1952 and have an opportunity to upgrade to an F640. I'm confused about how much more power the F640 will deliver to the PTO and drawbar over the 8n considering the hp ratings; 27.3 vs 31.0 and displacements, 119 vs 143. Is the F640 really that much of an upgrade in real use tasks like mowing?

A 640 will have a 4 speed like the 8N has it also does not have live PTO just like the 8N but it does have live hyds which is a major improvement over the 8N.

...how much will it cost you for the"opportunity"?....hands down .....640 a better machine in my opinion.....ammortize work over need over cost.......how sweet is the deal?

The engine on the 640 with overhead valves is way better than the flathead in my opinion. I have had several 8n"s and 2'ns . I have one 640 and much prefer it, especially enjoy the live 3 point

I have an 8N and a 660. Both are great tractors. But if I had to choose, the 660 wins. More power and better hydraulics. That said, I still love my 8N. 65 years old and still getting the job done.

You said "tasks like mowing". Well in this scenario, you do not have this choice, but if you did, live PTO would help mowing a lot more than live hydraulics......just sayin.

The 640 is a nice tractor, the HP number difference doesn't seem
like much, but it's enough that you can feel it just test driving it.

Live hydraulics and the option to add remote hydraulic lines
easily is a definite advantage.

All in a package that is physically not much larger and just
about as nimble as an 8N. It does weigh more.

I don't know your location, but $3500 would be top dollar
around here, even with all new tires.

Welcome to the forum!

On the other hand...... Since you already own the N..... If what you are doing is mostly mowing then $3500 seems like a lot of money to spend. You can add live hydraulics to your 8N for $4-500 - which is really nice when you have a brush mower on the 3 point hitch.

There are quite a few improvements from the 8N to the 640 - live hydraulics, more HP, OHV, the improved rear axles, etc. But, except for the live hydraulics, they won't make that much difference while pulling a mower.

Would I rather have the 640? Heck yea! Could I justify spending $3500 on a tractor to do the same things my already-paid-for 8N does? Probably not. In fact, no, I could not. Now, if money is not an object, it's a no brainer ;) But, it is a big consideration at my house.....

Absent special circumstances, I would not bother upgrading from an 8N to a 640 but would rather upgrade to an 860/861/871/881.

Any of those models can be bought for (at most) a small premium over a 6** tractor and will have another 10 HP.

This will allow you to also upgrade to a 6' rotary cutter.

Around here a nice 8N will run you $2-$2.5K.
A comparable 6XX tractor will run you $1-$1.5K more.
Is a 6XX worth it?
I think so.
If for no other reason than to get rid of that rediculously fast 8N reverse.

Right now this 3000 Diesel is for sale just down the road from me. Asking $3800 for the tractor - $4400 if you want the 90" Woods finish mower with it.

A 640 has everything good about it an n does, plus a bonus like live Hyde, easier to install remotes, easier option for power steering, better
breathing engine, etc.

My n have had the tanks drained and bats pulled since I got anything from 55 and later.

I would take that one over a 640 about two to one - IF it has a 6 or 8 speed and not the 4 speed. That one looks like it is from Belgium. Has the B style fenders and Euro style grill.
