Priming Oil Pump

My last started my front mount 8N 4 years ago. Surprised it started and only ran it long enough to move it around the lot. The oil pressure junction block was stripped between the gauge and junction block and had been plugged.

I did change the oil & filter 4 years ago when last started and less than 20 minutes on new oil.
Also has trans fluid in crankcase from unsticking rings.

Under my watch, I have installed new , oil pump plunger spring, oil pressure gauge, oil pipe from new Junction block, 12 volt conversion kit, ammeter, harness, plugs, coil, used dizzy from John Smith, new head gasket, carb that Gary rebuilt and new exhaust clamp, refaced exhaust manifold and lots of cleaning. Also have a new radiator, hoses, $23 thermostat.

Going to rig up a lawnmower tank and start before I replace the hood, tank and doglegs.

I primed the pump with a squirt of 90w and turned over the engine w/o plugs watching the oil pressure gauge - gauge never moved off of 0.

Would you guys start it and watch gauge for pressure ot take other action?

"squirt" isn't enough. Look at the path from the relief past the valve seat, down & through the oil gallery, on down through the block, through oil pump passages to the pump gears. You may make a mess, but use a squeeze bottle & hose & try for 5 ounces.
A squirt probably never made it out of the spring/plunger cavity.

BY........ya probably didn't give itt enuff prime. Squirter 'til stuff runs back out the BIG nut. Then QUICKLY turn yer engine over with starter motor, two-rumpas and a quick pull on spring loaded choke. Should start right up. 90wt gear oil is good choice, just needed MORE. .......oily Dell

Thanks JMOR, as I understand I should prime from the relief valve port. Great pic. I'm about to travel to farm for a week so I will hit it when I return.

Dell, seems like I've heard that starting procedure before, thanks for the reminder.

If you are going to prime it and then immediately start it you don't need to use SAE 90 gear oil. If it won't prime with a good slug of SAE 10W30 engine oil you have serious pump issues that need immediate attention.
