1949 8N won't move

I was blading when I got stuck. I had enough power on it to lift the front wheels. Then I heard something snap and I was done. It would not move forward or back in any gear. The hydraulics and PTO still work. Can any one tell me where to start looking for the problem.

Axle could have broken or the ring gear rivets broke. Or could have striped out the ring or pinion. Or striped out a wheel hub.

I agree with Old.
It's likely the rivetts in your ring gear.
Here are a couple of photos from a fellow with a similar problem.

He found these in the bottom of his rear center housing when he was cleaning it out.

So he pulled the left trumpet to get access to the differential.

Notice he is missing a couple of rivettes in the ring gear. He will need to drill out the rest of the bolts and replace them as they are loose.
Then replace them with bolts which can be purchased from the dealer.
Thanks to Rancher Rick for the use of his photos.

Jack up one wheel. Remove the PTO shaft
assembly.

With the tractor in first gear and running with
clutch engaged look into the PTO hole and see
if the ring gear is turning. If it isn"t the
transmission to differentail coupling may be
broken????
If it is turning then either the rivets/bolts
of the ring gear are broken if ring gear is
turning and the carrier is not turning. If the
carrier is turning the axle is broken/or the
cross or spider gears are broken.
If you suspect a broken axle jack up both
wheels and try to rock the wheel in and out at
top. If one will rock that is the broken axle.

Thanks for the help. With your help I was able to locate the problem. I broke the rear drive pinion and coupling. The front one looks ok. Know can you help me with what's next. Do I have to split the tractor. Is the differential assembly going to have to come apart. I have a book that says if I replace the pinion I also have to replace the drive gear assembly is this true.

Thanks in advance.

If you need them, I have a whole rear carrier and pinion gear.
I would sell them cheap, but shipping may be a bit.
I'm in central Michigan.
