new 8n progress

Well some good news, some not so good. The motor was stuck when I got it, I was not worried about it to much. I filled cylinders with 50/50 mix of ATF/Acetone mix. Let it sit a couple days. The motor is free now and sounds ok when rotated with starter with plugs out.

Now the not so good, the new distributor turned out to have Pertronix in it. Wiring is all new but a complete mess.

1) no spark, ignition switch is dead.
2) I ran a jumper wire from battery to coil wire and distributor "no spark"
3)I know nothing about Pertronix and things are a mess, so I want to remove that distributor and replace it with a points dizzy from another tractor.
4) How do I set the point dizzy in the engine properly to know it is set to fire on proper plug.
Also I looked in my manual it gives firing order, but not what plug is #1 # 2 ect..

Thanks for any help ...

The front mount distributor has drive slots that are offset, allowing you to install the distributor in only one timing position. With the coil and cap off, hold the distributor up to the mounting pad and rotate the shaft until it drops into place. At that point, the distributor should be fully against the mounting pad. Line up the bolt holes and install the bolts. It is possible to get the drive tab into the slot backwards, but both bolt holes won't line up and the distributor won't be fully against the mounting surface.

If you stand in front of the tractor and face the distributor, the top left outlet from the cap is #1. Below it is #2 and continuing counter-clockwise are #4, then #3 (top right).

If you set up your distributor correctly while it was off, you should be good to go!

#1 is closest to radiator. Timing on front mount is set on the
distributor I believe. Offset tang should solve the rest of the
problem. The procedure is in the FO-4, but doing a quick search
on google for "timing front mount 8n" will provide all the info you
need. I have set timing on my 2 side-mounts (different than front
mount) with no mechanical knowledge, just using google and
youtube.

You don't have to replace the distributor, just take the electronic stuff out and put the points and condenser back in. You will need the terminal block that goes into the side of the distributor or you can run a wire from the coil to the points.

his is a front mount he will need the breaker plate assembly also.

Thanks for the replies, I did not do the electronic conversion, so I do not have the parts. I took a points dizzy out of another tractor and put it in. It starts and runs, not very well due to all the tranny fluid I put in it trying to unstick the motor. I did spin it with plugs out to blow as much as possible out. I will run it every once in a while to burn it out. So far I am very happy with my $750..00 tractor...
