Back Yard Bob strikes again.....

Fella looking for a sleeve tool sent me these pictures. I thought I had seen it all when it came to sleeves in these engines but this is a new one. It appears that Back Yard Bob decided to "fix" a problem on #1 cylinder by honing the ID in the .090 wall sleeve oversize and installing a .040 wall sleeve inside the .090 wall sleeve. He then sold the tractor to my customer and as you can see it didn't go well for him....

SO.....As Royse always says....."That might just buff right out"????

Enough bore hole to install new sleeve, piston, and new rod????, or is the block toast???

He is going to R&R all of the sleeves and install a new piston and liner kit.

(quoted from post at 21:15:45 03/16/15) Ok, dumb question. Why wouldn't it work?

How do you keep the inner sleeve in place? If you knew what you were doing AND had the equipment to do it properly you MIGHT get it to work. But given all of that why take the risk when installing a new .090 sleeve is quicker, easier, and a known reliable repair?

A few drops of LockTite sleeve glue and it would have been still running forty years from now! Cheapskate!

Sure makes it easy.....I'm suprised, that ya don't have a set yet.
Once ya get the engine, on a stand....from start to finish...about 30 min's..out with the old sleeves, and in with the new!!! ( and that is with checking/cleaning the bores, for debre (sp), and fit.!!!)

Nice! I remember look at it 2 years ago when we did my engine but ended up just taking the block and crank to the machine shop. I don't forsee getting out of the tractors for awhile so I would be smart to have one

Its like Crack, I never had any interest in doing much work on them, but now with the work on my 4000, Dads new 2N, and some of the smaller stuff, every time I see one in a fence row, I keep saying to myself. "I can fix that"....

Not sure which hobby I like most... The tractor is fun, my kids go nuts when we go for little rides on either...

I started building trikes before I graduated from college in aviation and decided to stick with it to see what would happen. That was about 10 years ago and the Red trike in the photo is my most recent build with a Corvette LS1 engine...

I’m thinking this tractor thing is like a sickness. Once I get one part off to repair, I can see that if I just remove the next part I could clean that up too. Might as well since I’m right there, don’t want to go back in there later. YEP it’s a sickness leading me right into that can of worms.

Anyway, the tractor is coming along. Out here in the sticks I’ve found that a lot of farmers make due with what they got. Too far to town. We figured this person bought the wrong part and was damned determined to make it work.
Anyway Old Hokie, with the picture posted here of the tools to remove sleeves I see that there are two pucks and was thinking the same puck would remove both sleeves. So if you can send me a invoice for the whole dang kit like you see here I will order one as soon as I can.
“If your gonna do it, do it right or don’t do it at all.” That’s my motto and I’m sticking to it.

I moved out to Missouri three years ago and bought a small farm to raise sheep. I don’t really know anyone around here and it’s kinda hard to get to know folks when they look at you as an outsider. During my hunt for the 8n I found several around me that need help. One ol boy had two. A 9n and a 8n. The 8n was for his little boy but it had blowby real bad and just sat behind the barn. I figure that with the right tools in hand I just might make a friend around here yet.
