Found my nos headlights and tail light yesterday digging through boxes. Heres a pic of the instructions, and my progress on the tractor. Pistons are 60 over. No sleeves in the block. Now Im off to pick up some rear steel wheels for on of the n's and get back to work on the tractor. Hope to get the engine buttoned back up and pull the 3 pt cover get that fixed.

Making progress and taking picture as you go. Very good references. Would really be nice if you could preserve that instruction sheet on the lights and have some copies made. I for one would like to have one. Just a thought.

Save your self some grief and find the dot's on the cam/crank gear for alignment/trimming... Make sure there are no other marks that may lead you astray...

I am the worst to make my own reference marks I know it but the next guy will be in deep DO-DO unless he confirms it...

BYW that front oil slinger is a EZ part to forget about..

It would be a good time to read up on and understand "On the Rock" are valve overlap... It works on every 4 cycle engine I have ever worked on small and large...

I'm pulling the crank now. I got the old
rope seal out the the retainer on the rear
but couldn't get the new one in. I dropped
the crank down a little too for more
clearance. Should have just saved the time
and pulled it first. I'm not even sure
where in town I can get copies made of the
pape . Its big so can't do it at home. So
I will check into it when I get time.

You might ask Ed Gooding over on the little N Club to help you scan it. He might have a way to digitize it and store a copy of it for you and for all who might like a copy.

Good idea on Ed posting the instructions Ultradog.

Or I would be willing to do it also. Even if the scans were only part of the page each. I could put them together and post as a pdf.

Places like Office Depot or a UPS Store have large format scanners and will be happy to scan it for a small fee.

Standard bearings on the connecting rods. Mains have brass shims under them so I'm assuming they are standard also. Makes sense why the crank isn't marked that its been ground because it hasnt. Torquing down the bolt now. Pit the flywheel back on and get it buttoned back up. Yes the timing marks are lined up.

That's right! Not many breaks allowed! I like to get things done. Got everything but the head and flywheel back on then i had to get the kiddo home.

When you get the rear seal out I would like to know what it looks like and possibly why you think it was leaking...

This questions are never asked there is a reason.. All the leakers I have had all but one and it was not a N with a rope seal I never could finger why it leaked... its normally a no brainier the seal is coming apart...

I think it went in the garbage. I'll have
to get it out next weekend. The rear was
leaking the back side of the flywheel had
oil all over it. It wasn't coming apart so
I have no idea. The gaskets were
overlapping the ends of the rope seals. No
sealant anywhere. The new seals definately
made for a tighter fit on both ends of the
crank.

I try..time is limited out there to the weekends so I crack the whip. Hoping to get the studs cleaned up next weekend and get the head, flywheel, clutch, and gov back on and get the lift done and get the engine back on. Was hoping to pull the cover this weekend but no such luck. I found out I should have removed the flywheel before putting the engine on the stand as the crank wouldn't come out with it on. But was easy to get it off while on the stand. I put rubber hose on the connecting rod bolts so the journals didn't get scratched. Be a few weeks till paint but getting closer!

Also sounds like you know what you are doing. I love that you have the young ones working on it too. It's never too early to start the hand/eye coordination. When my youngest was her age she put the pan bolts in a tranny I overhauled for my father in law. I showed her once and she said "I can do it all by myself". And she did.

I didn't bring it home with me. Its in a locked shed till I return to get it. Depending on the upcoming weather it may not be for 2 weeks. Don't worry they're not going anywhere. Ive got 2 weekends left on my permit from the dnr to go on state land and get wood they've cut down with a atv...after that no atv allowed.

Hi from western SD. Are you sure the pistons are 060? Weren't .090 used without the thick sleeves. Ford or Mercury pistons?

Hi Denny..here's a closer up pic. There was another number on the other side I'll have to get a pic of. I'm going to venture to say it had thin wall and they bored it to fit the 060 then if it ever needed rebuilt again it could be bored for the 090 sleeves.

I made a plate to mount the engine to my engine stands just so I could get at the back side of the block while working on it...

You can check for leaks before you install the engine... You will need to seal it up and apply no more than 1 1/2 PSI air pressure...
Kid bubble maker are windex work great to find those annoying leaks... I use smoke but its expensive smoke regulated to 1/2 PSI...

Good to know. This is only the 2nd one we've torn Into like this and I forgot when I did mine I took the flywheel off before getting it on the stand. I used sealant on this one so I'm hoping no leaks.

They may be a 3rd and a 4th... Somewhere along the line the fun will fizzle out... Warranty work does not pay well its even worst when the issue could have been caught while it is sitting there look'N at ya....

I enjoy making the tools and coming up with solutions way more that the actual work...

I have a one owner 52 8N I started on 11 years ago... It ran good every thang worked nice tin etc... I took the head off because there was oil in the coolant... Whut the ell I may as well rebuild the engine I removed the valves while it was sitting under the shed,,, mite as well knock that out I am in no hurry and stopped...

It can be brought  ... I have enough tractors...
