#1 piston on TDC

I need to see when my #1 piston is TDC. What is the best was without dismantling the whole thing again? Thanks for your replies.
 
Is the hood and tank still off?? If it is not hard to do and you have a 50/50 chance by pulling the spark plug and shine a light in and watch the piston. Or you can pull that plug and put your finger in the plug hole and feel compression. By doing the finger thing you get real close and can use a plastic straw like on a carb cleaner can to feel it and where it is
 
What are we working with? If a 9N, 2N, or early 8N, ignition timing can be accomplished without the need for knowing where TDC is.

Later 8N's have a timing mark on the flywheel indicating TDC.

What'cha got?

That being said, there's all sorts of ways to find TDC, from marks (if present) to using a bent wire through the sparkpug hole to indicate where the piston is, to using a fitting in the sparkplug hole with a balloon attached.

Tell us WHAT and WHY, ad we'll tell you HOW!

Thanks Bob. Sorry it's an 8N. I know about the timing mark on the fly wheel but I forgot to check that when I reassembled the engine. I'm afraid I'm 180 degrees off?????
 
With ignition OFF, hold finger over the #1 sparkplug hole while a helper cranks the engine (with a hand crank). As you begin to feel pressure/escaping air at the #1 sparkplug hole, you are coming up on the compression stroke which will end when the TDC mark on the flywheel is lined up with the stationary mark.

I'm thinking I put my crankshaft in 180 degrees off so I won't be able to see the stationary mark when it's TDC. I'll have to try the straw or balloon method. Thanks for your quick feedback Bob. It is really appreciated.

No, you didn't!

Flywheel corresponds to crankshaft, and when TDC mark is lined up, #1 piston will be at the top,in either the exhaust or the power stroke, and the "finger over the sparkplug hole" will guide you to the TDC on the power stroke location!

Now I understand (can you tell I'm new at this)... I love taring it down and reassembling my 8N but I don't necessarily want to do it again so soon. Thanks again
 
Yep, stuff like this sometimes takes a little while to think about/sort out, and it's best to allow a little time to do that before tearing stuff back apart unnecessarily.
