Wiring Harness

I bought the expensive wiring harness from YT. Used the manual and instructions provided.

Voltage Regulator is a replacement. has B (battery) F (field) and A (arm). Checked made sure it was wired correctly. There was one remaining black wire that instructions said ground.

So, I attached it to the mounting base plate of the VR, connected battery and turned on ignition switch to start the tractor. Wiring harness started smoking melted the sucker.

Anybody know where that little black wire should have been attached to?

On my 49 8N the black wire goes from the ground terminal on the generator to the ground on the voltage regulator.

A BETTER question would be "what do you have the other end of the black wire connected to"?

IIRC, the other end should be connected to the frame ground on the generator.

I'm gonna gov out on a limb here and GUESS you have it connected to something "hot"!

Dale,

Thanks for the picture. Looks like we have the same wiring harness.

I took the VR off and compared it yours. There is no where to connect the black wire from. the VR says 6 volt pos ground and I bought it from YT. Guess they sent me the wrong one.

Bob,

Thanks for the quick reply!

I have a black wire going from the G post on the generator and it should (I think) connect somewhere on the voltage regulator.

But there is no post to connect it to. I mounted it to the base plate of the VR, and that didn't work. Think I need to look closer at the VR.

Not necesaarily the black wire
It happenedwhen you turned the key on. Sounds like either the vr was bad and it was trying to motor the generator which would be pretty tough belted to the engine or it was a B circuit vr which energized the wrong part of the gen.

not sure what is going on. replaced the wiring harness and it did it again. VR came from YT, guess I'll replace it again and see what happens. I really want this up and running.
