According to John Smiths site the horizontal grills were aluminum and were replaced by steel vertical grills.

Yes- the late 1940 9N's changed to steel grilles at or about serial number 45899 to replace the weak aluminum ones. Early 9N grilles attached different than later ones, and 2Ns were different than that. The flip-down grille was not introduced until the 8N Model.

Did you make an error in you statement? Didn't all Ford steel grilles have vertical bars, not horizontal? Ferguson had the steel grill with horizontal bars.

hhhhmmmm...don't see where I made that statement. What you said goes -Early 9N s used the aluminum grilles with horizontal slats. The steel replacements had vertical bars.
