8N hydraulic cylinder rebild

Okay, I have a question. After searching for a
couple hours, I just want to know the order of
gasket/o-ring placement on a Ford 8N hydraulic
cylinder. From the open end, please. I found so
many conflicting views of this and would
appreciate someone telling me the proper order of
gasket placement. I'm using a leather gasket and
an o-ring. What goes first? The rough side or the
smooth side of the leather gasket? I'm waiting for
some replies that agree.

The backup ring (leather or otherwise) always goes behind the o-ring.[list:a8ca0e8306][*:a8ca0e8306]That means side opposite the oil pressure.[*:a8ca0e8306]That means towards the rod end of a single acting cylinder.[*:a8ca0e8306]That means towards the open end of the 8N lift cylinder.[/list:u:a8ca0e8306]Rough side or smooth side of the leather backup ring makes no real difference but most people put the smooth side against the ring.

The I-T FO-4 manual has good pictures of the hyd system on the 8N so that should tell you where o-ring go. As for the improve NAA piston I agree with Hokie

..with piston sitting on table with closed end up, put Backup washer on first(if leather put rough side up, toward top) then install the O-ring-if backup is neoprene one side will be slidhtly cupped, put it toward the O-ring)..I oil the inside of the cylinder good before reinstalling the piston..TIP: Find at least two bolts with the same thread as the top cover bolts. Cut the head off and screw them in to opposite corners or sides to help guide the top back on when lowering it and trying to not mess up the gasket..NO GOOP on the gasket..Lower the top a little check inside, lower then check inside..reconnect thecontrol valve inside once lowered into position. Hope this helps. Please let me know how you come out.I use the GL-1 90 wt oil in mine. The 134 is thinner and will fimd places to leak quicker then the GL-1. When refilling with oil, leave the bottom bolt out of the dipstick plate and just fill till it runs out the hole..When it runs out, thats enough.HTH

Indeed. The rings are standard AS-568A components:

NAA-533A - o-ring, industry dash size [b:5a75cb2459]-330[/b:5a75cb2459], .213 crossection, 2.100 ID, Buna-N, 90 durometer
NAA-473A - backup ring, , industry dash size [b:5a75cb2459]-330[/b:5a75cb2459], .183 wide, 2.138 ID

Note: As Leonard says Teflon (PTFE) split or wound backup rings are much easier to install than the original leather rings and will provide superior service.
