The farm all cub was dead last time I tried to start it, put it on a charger, (it has been on a battery tender all winter) battery charger wouldn't charger it, talked to a friend today he ask if I checked the water, dang I always forget to check the water, my question is do you think its to late to put water in, I checked the water and it was low, I know this is a ford site and I have a 8 n ford, but I check in here everyday and I feel like I know you guys and trust your answers. thanks

It can't hurt to try, but I would be prepared to buy a new battery. I am not really sold on battery tenders, they are not all equal.

Low as in how low?? Does it smell like slupher?? (sp). If it does good chance the battery is fried. Low on water and charging it can cause bad things in a battery

"dang I always forget to check the water"

1. Get a yellow post-it
2. Make a Note to check battery water
3. Tape it to the top of the charger
4. Probably go buy a new battery..

You might get lucky though and it may take a charge, depends on how low it was.

Agreed, RG.

One should not leave anything other than a proper battery maintainer continuously connected to a lead acid battery.

I use a Battery Tender Plus unit. Green color front face cover.

Very good quality and it charges the batteries up then cuts off, you can leave it connected to the battery if you want.

Cost a bit more, I have seen some cheaper units, but would not trust leaving them connected to the battery.

A good hot battery can resist the cold weather much better than a low charge battery.

If your battery is low on fluid, you need to add distilled water not tap water as it can have impurities that can ruin the battery.

I had never heard of a motor home battery before ?

Starting batteries
Main article: Automotive battery
Lead-acid batteries designed for starting automotive engines are not designed for deep discharge. They have a large number of thin plates designed for maximum surface area, and therefore maximum current output, but which can easily be damaged by deep discharge. Repeated deep discharges will result in capacity loss and ultimately in premature failure, as the electrodes disintegrate due to mechanical stresses that arise from cycling. Starting batteries kept on continuous float charge will have corrosion in the electrodes which will result in premature failure. Starting batteries should be kept open circuit but charged regularly (at least once every two weeks) to prevent sulfation.

Starting batteries are lighter weight than deep cycle batteries of the same battery dimensions, because the cell plates do not extend all the way to the bottom of the battery case. This allows loose disintegrated lead to fall off the plates and collect under the cells, to prolong the service life of the battery. If this loose debris rises high enough it can touch the plates and lead to failure of a cell, resulting in loss of battery voltage and capacity.

Deep cycle batteries
Main article: Deep cycle battery
Specially designed deep-cycle cells are much less susceptible to degradation due to cycling, and are required for applications where the batteries are regularly discharged, such as photovoltaic systems, electric vehicles (forklift, golf cart, electric cars and other) and uninterruptible power supplies. These batteries have thicker plates that can deliver less peak current, but can withstand frequent discharging.[15]

Some batteries are designed as a compromise between starter (high-current) and deep cycle batteries. They are able to be discharged to a greater degree than automotive batteries, but less so than deep cycle batteries. They may be referred to as "Marine/Motorhome" batteries, or "leisure batteries".

I use a Schumacher trickle charger for batteries that don't have regular use. It's 6v/12v and charges at 1-1/2 amps, has 3 lights[charging, charged, trouble]. It's available at Wallyworld, and I've had mine for about 10 years without trouble.

What do you have to lose by adding water? In theory when the plates dry out, battery is shot.

A good battery should never need a battery tender or trickle charger. A good battery will hold a charge. Bad batteries will self discharge. So if you needed a battery tender you either have a bad battery or something is draining the battery. IMHO, battery tenders are like putting the battery on life support. I have over 20 lead acid batteries. I've never used a tender. Never saw a need to use one. Don't own one. However, I do have a batteryminder 12248. I rotate between all my batteries because it will top the charge off the desulfate. When it gets to the final stage of maintaining, I rotate to another battery. I think it very important to desulfate a lead acid battery, but never trickle charger.

I am currently experimenting with a similar situation with the two 12v lead acid batteries on an electric wheelchair. One battery is good, one is bad, They are wired in series making 24v. The battery is sealed, but I popped off the top and added about 25 cc of water to each cell the bad battery. It helped some, bad is measuring 110 cca. Good battery is showing 200 cca. Before that the best I could get on the bad was 70 cca.

No it don't have a smell to it, it looks like there is some water in it just below the plates.
