it is necessary to apply gasket sealer to the rear seal retainer before installing in the block? This is the retainer that the rope seal goes into. Thanks guys.

just so I'm sure I'm making myself clear. I'm talking about using a sealer to seal the retainer to the block before putting the rope seal in the groves. I'm not saying put a sealer under the rope. Clear as mud? Thanks again

I used sealer on the retainer (where it sits) when I put the 8N engine together recently. Don't use any on the rope seal. Haven't reinstalled the engine yet...praying it doesn't leak though.

This is a pretty good guide line for putting the engine back together. Drop down to page 14 and the part about the seal retainer is there. You will have to copy and paste as the site won't let me make a clickable url. Remove all the spaces in the link first. Then copy and paste.

I sealed mine w/ black permatex. then clamped it in place until it dried. It didn't take very much. I couldn't stand taking the chance with a potential source of a leak at a real inhospitable place to get to. I also had to repair a broken part of the groove in the pan that holds the rope seal. I gas welded some stellite to build it back up. I thought brazing it would be too soft. I have some left over that I used for making corks on horseshoes for winter. not sure you can even buy it anymore for a oxy-acet application ( I have alot). My stock was given to me 35 years ago from my dad and he got it from an old timer that used it for hardfacing plow shares with a torch I think.( real old timers) Its hard as hell , wears good and is dam difficult to gas weld with if you haven't used it alot. I am sure I violated some cosmic biblical rule of N tractor rebuilding, but I don't care. It worked for me

It would take a dumb MF'er to not apply a small amount of sealer there.... Permatex aviation make a gasket would be a good choice... Its good enuff to seal the crankcase hafts on a 10K 2 cycle boat motor it sure as ell should seal a N rear seal retainer...
